Help!
My win 10 pc required a reset and reinstall. I then had to reinstall calibre and installed the version I'd been using (64 bit 4.23). The e-book viewer, does not work and I have to convert any azw3 files to epub or mobi and then open one or the other of them with cool reader to view either of them. I get my books from amazon and was sticking with 4.23 because of the problems associated with the introduction of KF8. Has the problem with KF8 been solved so I can install and use 5.40.0? If not, how can I get the e-book viewer in 4.23 to work?

What issues with KF8? Do you mean KFX? I've been using 5.xx for a long while with no issues.

Yes, KFX. Have you been using version 5.xx with kindle ebooks? Does the DeDRM calibre pkug-in work properly with kindle ebooks?

Make sure that you get the latest version of the DeDRM plugin from NoDRM. The version available from Apprentice Harper is outdated.

I have:

calibre-64bit-5.40.0.msi
DeDRM_tools_10.0.2.zip

...so I install calibre-64bit-5.40.0.msi and then add DeDRM_tools_10.0.2.zip to it, and that is all I need to do?

I uninstalled calibre (64 bit 4.23) and then installed calibre 64 bit 5.40.0. Then I installed the DeDRM tools 10.0.2 plugin into calibre. It successfully loads a DRMed AZW3 into calibre (and successfully strips the DRM) but when I try to view the file in calibre the viewer loads on my task bar but does not open. I can use the new calibre installation to convert the AZW3 to an EPUB and then successfully view it using Cool Reader. The calibre viewer doesn't open when I try to view any of the AZW3 or EPUB or MOBI files that already exist in my calibre library as well!

Your viewer is probably just off screen.
Try: Alt+space: M , Then use the arrow keys (try the Left first) to see if it appears after a half dozen taps.

Can I safely allow Kindle for PC to upgrade (I'm using 1.17.0 now) to the most recent version (I think it's currently ver. 1.35)?

No. That last version that is safe to use is 1.34. I suggest you stick with 1.17 if it is working for you.

Yep, It's dong the job and I have no complaints or issues with it, I'll continue to not allow it to upgrade, thanks again.
