Leah
Hi, was wondering if anyone could help.
I was given a Kobo Forma (model no N782) from a relative. Read all about it, looks wonderful. However there are two problems with it. 1/ The power button is not working, doesn't matter how hard/soft I press, it doesn't start up (have connected to desktop and taken it out of sleep mode so it'll just run down the battery). 2/ from halfway down the screen, there are faint black lines running across, all the way to the bottom of the screen. Any advice would be much appreciated. I'm not the most technically minded! Can I contact Kobo? Is it worth trying to fix? I don't really want to just throw it away! |

It’s almost certainly out of warranty, and is showing signs that it’s broken.
You could try fixing it, it doesn’t seem like the substrate is broken since the lines are uniform and straight. So maybe the screen just needs to be reconnected. Though you’d have to be comfortable opening the Forma and finding where the screen is plugged in and disconnecting ribbon cable. Even that isn’t guaranteed to fix the screen issue. Not sure what could fix the button issue, it’s known to be difficult for some people but it sounds like yours is actually broken. Perhaps it’s just not connecting to whatever it hits when you press it, so opening and looking may present more information. It’s also worth mentioning that the above may break everything even more. Though I’d question how usable it is right now. A sleep cover would solve waking it up, and nickelmenu can at least add a reboot and power off option. Though to turn it on would require you to plug it in. The black lines are not likely to be resolved with any amount of software tinkering though. |

Which country do you live in?
The actual problem with the ereader is an unknown, so who knows how much it will cost to diagnose then repair. Then there is always the chance the repairer cannot repair it, or it will cost more to repair than a new ereader. You decide not to repair, but you are still hit with a $xx quotation fee. Suddenly the new ereader has become that little bit more expensive. It may be more cost effective to simply purchase a new one. |

It’s not worth the cost of repairing. It’s better for you to just get a new one. It’s sad that it’s a throw away world but vs repairing but it’s just not cost effective.

Also, I had a similar problem to you. I asked about it in this thread....
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=341787 I could have spent time & $$ to either find someone to fix it or pull it apart myself and try, but in the end I purchased a new Kobo Libra 2 and have been happy with my decision. |

Thank you all for your help. As you say, sad it's too hard to repair but I feel better having tried to find out if it could be done.

You can see if you can get another Forma or go for the Libra 2 (7" screen). The Sage has rather poor battery life and (IMHO) is not a good enough replacement for the Forma.

I decided to roll the dice on a Sage and see how the battery is with *my* reading habits and if it's enough to satisfy me. I wanted to keep with the 8" screen (so hard to think about going smaller after having the 8" for over a year now). I don't care about note-taking or audio books or highlighting or annotating or anything but reading. Worst case scenario, the Sage sucks and I'm on the hunt again and maybe something better will come along. Last edited by Prepper; 03-02-2022 at 11:45 AM. |

Typically I have lighting set at around 18-22% (top scale) and a range of 10-30% on the bottom (warm light) scale, all depending on time of day and lighting conditions.
