Content Personal documents only show the cover if I download them

I recently bought a new Kindle Paperwhite 11th generation. I made the switch from Kobo because Kobo did not have the function to sync side-loaded books progress between devices.

With Kindle I can achieve that by sending books by email. My only problem with this is that covers only show up once I download the books, and then if I delete them from the device the cover defaults back to the one generated by the kindle. Which is not the case on the Kindle app for android, where all the covers are shown regardless of them being downloaded or not.

I attached some images with the kindle device and app behaviour.

That’s the way it works: thumbnails for personal documents are generated on-device (if the content is properly formatted and has a cover image). For all the books in Amazon store, thumbnails can be downloaded even if the content itself is not downloaded. If you download purchased content, it might also generate on device, and that is certainly also true if you download the content for transfer via USB cable.

Personal documents are not guaranteed to have cover images in them (they could be PDFs or a kindle format that was generated without a cover image). And there might be legal issues in doing so.

Thanks for the reply. It is still strange how the Kindle app displays the covers even though I didn't download them.
