Stuck in Diags mode
Hello All,
I have been trying to jailbreak my Kindle KT2 and downgrade the firmware to a previous version. It looks like I skipped one of the necessary steps and now I am stuck in Diags mode. As background: I successfully jailbroke the Kindle, installed "hotfix," installed Mobile Read Package Installer and KUAL, and installed Cowards Rescue Pack using the previous two. Then I copied the rootfs.img.gz and the uImage files of the previous firmware version I am trying to downgrade to onto the Kindle's root directory, and then restarted the Kindle. This landed me in Diags mode, as it evidently should. However, it turns out that I needed to have installed USB networking beforehand so that I can access the Kindle via SSH using my PC. When I click on the menu item "USBnet" in Diags mode nothing happens, evidently because the USB networking has not been installed. I have now downloaded the USB networking package, but apparently I need to install it using Mobile Read Package Installer via KUAL, which I don't have access to in Diags mode. Does anyone know how I can get out of Diags mode and back to the normal Kindle interface so I can use KUAL? "Reboot" just brings me back to Diags mode, and with "Disable Diags" I get the message device_info.xml not found (Run Device Setting.) Thanks in advance for your help! |

Now the next step for my downgrade is to enable USB networking. The instructions I am following are here: https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kin...USB_Networking I have successfully installed the package using Mobile Reader Package Installer via QUAL. So the next step would be: "See this site to enable NDIS based USB networking on your PC". The site is: https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/NDI...er_setup_on_pc and its instructions are the following: "For Windows users: You'll probably need to install a specific driver, if Windows fail to autodetect everything. This .inf file should do the job (except on Windows XP, see the next paragraph). If not, check if something on this page does the job for you. For Windows 7 also check this method ("...Sharing Device" Network Adapter also works). For Windows 10 only: Your Windows 10 computer may already recognize a Kindle as a network adapter. In that case, it will appear in your 'Network and Sharing' center as an unrecognized network. Congratulations, you are set. If not, see this Win10 RNDIS Driver Tutorial" I don't understand what to do here. When I open the "Network and Sharing" center on my Windows 10 PC I don't see the Kindle as an unrecognized network. The Win10 RNDIS Driver Tutorial (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh....php?p=3283986) says: 【Situation】 "On Windows 10, when jailbroken Kindle with enabled USBNet is plugged via USB, it will appear as a "Serial USB device (COM3)" in device manager." But when I go to my device manager, I don't see any "Serial USB device (COM3)". Part of these instructions (i.e. the Wind10 RNDIS Driver Tutorial) say "In Device Manager, expand "Ports (COM & LPT)", R-click "Serial USB device (COM3)" > Update Driver Software..." There is no such "Ports (COM & LPT)" listed in my Device Manager. I searched on the internet and there is a page describing what to do if Ports (COM & LPT) is not showing on the device manager: https://support-bradyid.force.com/s/...Device-Manager It says you have to go to "Action" and select "Add Legacy Hardware". But this option is not there in my "Action" menu. I have Windows 10 Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.2214) on an Ideapad 100S Laptop. If anyone can help me further, I would be grateful. Thank you in advance! |

"Download & Unzip attachment kindle_rndis.inf_amd64-v1.0.0.1.zip R-click "5-runasadmin_register-CA-cer.cmd" and "Run as administrator"* In Device Manager, expand "Ports (COM & LPT)", R-click "Serial USB device (COM3)" > Update Driver Software... Browse for my computer for driver software > Select extract folder" The third instruction ("In Device Manager, expand "Ports (COM & LPT)", R-click "Serial USB device (COM3)" > Update Driver Software...") is the one I can't follow since there is no "Ports (COM & LPT)" listed in my Device Manager. |

There is a much simpler way to downgrade. All you need is a serial port connection.
Stop booting the kernel. Then you select "initialize partition table", then make the fat partition accessible via usb, copy the upgrade file to the version you want and select upgrade. See the threads on debrick via serial port for details. |
