Calibre User Manual: all apostrophes are missing; and other suggestions

1. Just reporting a problem with the latest Calibre User manual. All the apostrophes are missing in contractions. So I'll has become Ill, We'll has become Well, You'll — Youll; and so on.

2. I'd like to suggest reducing the margins and increasing the font-size of text in the manual. Not everyone can cope with the font-size at 100% and increasing the zoom widens the page and makes for an uncomfortable read.

3. I would also like to suggest shortening the manual to around 100 or so pages, and aiming it fairly and squarely at the average user, with separate user guides for advanced users (on Python programming etc.) This would make the main manual easier to index (which is missing at the moment). Consider, also, reducing the size and number of images in favour of body text, and reducing the amount of blank space.

4. Make a .odt version of the manual available for download (like LibreOffice) so that users can customize it to their requirements.

2) Open the EPUB version of the manual and increase the fonts size and use the viewer settings to control maximum text width

3) I'm afraid I have no interest in this

4) there is an epub version available convert it in calibre to docx and edit it in libreoffice to your hearts content.

Yes, the online manual is OK, but the apostrophes seem to have got lost in the pdf version at https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/zh_CN/calibre.pdf.

It's happening with certain contractions such as we'll to well, you'll to youll, we'll to well etc. For example, section 10.4.9, "The book youre (sic) converting …".

I downloaded https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/zh_CN/calibre.pdf and opened in default PDF viewer on Linux Mint 20.1, mate desktop.

I have to agree with the OP here. The web site source at https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/reg...et-complicated includes the string "you're". The pdf has "youre"

Agreed. It seems to be dropping apostrophes (’) but not quotes (') or back quotes (`)

FWIW

the PDF version has a few other formatting issues, ADE doesn't handle some formats in the epub version correctly, BUT the calibre viewer formats everything correctly

Edit --

A fresh convert of the download-able epub version to pdf using calibre seems to fix all of the above format glitches. Maybe the online PDF just needs to be re-converted

This is mainly for Kovid

I did a calibre EPUB to DOCX conversion the using default settings.
I opened that DOCX in Word 365 Version 2201 (Build 14827.20158)
Predictably, Word reported Compatibility issues - all DOCXs from calibre, and many from elsewhere have this issue - it's easily fixed in Word via File->Info->Convert Compatibility.
In Word I saved the DOCX as a PDF, which I've attached.
My PDF viewer finds no occurrences of "youre" or "youll".

Noteworthy: Word's PDF is 4 times bigger than your PDF

That PDF is rather a mess. For example see page 43, 46, 51, 69. It seems to get code blocks very wrong. The Template Language section starting on page 327 is a fine example.

BTW: I suspect the issues you raise for the PDF I posted stem from the DOCX I got from the calibre EPUB->DOCX conversion - GIGO.
