Writing (not annotating) on Elipsa and reading PDFs.
Does the Elipsa only have notes & annotations etc for existing books or is there a stand alone text edit application that could work with a BT keyboard?
It's actually not much if any different number of pixels from my Android based 7.8" Mars, but I do find the old scanned book PDFs a bit hard to read on that. Oddly Argos store and Argos.ie in Ireland call it the Kobo Stylus, but same description as Elipsa in English on Amazon.de, which is more expensive even before shipping cost. It's €499 on Argos Ireland. The Mars has a nice stock PDF ereader with adjustable dark, white, contrast, manual or auto crop stored per book. What is the Elipsa PDF reader like? Humorously Argos like every other Foreign chain ignores local Irish situations. It claims to support the Library. It doesn't directly. You need go go through hoops with a PC download or use Belinda Borrowbox Android App.
Also of course all the UK owned stores sell radio with DAB. Switched off in May 2021, only had 43% coverage and only RTE apart from some South West tests. |

Seems there is a notes app, but perhaps doesn't work with keyboard, only handwriting recognition?

Mini Review
Dear Reader, I bought it!
The PDF reader for scanned documents is as poor as on the Libra or Original H2O: 1) There is no crop, you can zoom, but have to unzoom to go to the next page. Likebook Mars has two margin crop modes. Both work well. 2) There is no brightness / contrast / dark /light clipping. Some scanned PDFs the text is pale and some the background is too grey. The Mars lets you adjust to get white background, black text etc. My BT keyboard DOES connect, and you can type in text on the epub annotation box. The arrow keys work in the Notepad application, but no text. HOWEVER, the handwriting recognition is the most amazing I've seen in 30 years. I can write normally with the stylus, as quick as a ball point pen and so far it's 100%. Makes me wonder why OCR hasn't progressed as much. I've not yet used the "export" and tried to copy it to the laptop. I presume it creates a docx file. I copied about 160 books using Calibre, many large PDFs and speed was good. The Android MTP based phones / tablets / Mars eink are abominably slow. MTP is a disaster. As an epub reader it's fine and like a Trade Size or Hard Back book with suitable margins, header, footer and font size. Daft they didn't add page buttons. |

It seems to sometimes lose the BT Keyboard, then needs powered off & on.
However the down or next arrows turn to next page and up or prior arrows to previous page. Page Up and Page Down do nothing. There is nothing obvious to indicate the BT keyboard is active unless you go into BT connect. The Basic Notepad is just a sketch pad. Many dialog boxes, but not all, take character input from the BT keyboard. |

The Notebook is saved in "Exported Notebooks" in the root
the .docx has any equations as images. Converted handwriting is regular text. It's certainly feasible to hand-write snippets of stories and convert all to text. |

The Elipsa DID do an update to 4.28.17925 at setup / first use.
A menu check for updates found none OTA. Calibre updated (when I asked) to 4.30.18838 See https://pgaskin.net/KoboStuff/kobofirmware.html This has moved the Bluetooth from Beta features to Settings and now there is indication if it's on or off and saved devices. |

The cropping & contrast etc issues with scanned PDFs are solved with KOReader, though it doesn't seem to cope with rotate, so I've locked it with USB & power as the top in Portrait.
