Busted Switch 505
This morning was a real shock. I pulled out my reader from my bag and tried to switch it on - nothing. At first I thought I hadn't moved the switch enough, but when I tried again I noticed that it felt loose.
It feels like a spring has gone or something. Tonight when I get home I need to find the receipt so I can take it back to Waterstones. I wouldn't have expected something like this to happen so I am hoping that there is a fault with the unit rather than a design flaw. I just hope that Waterstones have some more in stock to quickly replace it... I really missed reading my book this morning! |

I think you're the first who reported such issue, so it definitely doesn't look like a design flaw.

That's good to know.
Managed to get the reader replaced with fairly minimum problem (I was told that since Sony supply the books I would need to speak to Sony... I explained that I wouldn't expect John Lewis to make me speak to Apple if I had a problem with my Ipod... A quick word with the manager and they thought a replacement wouldn't be a problem) So, book is now fully charged waiting for me to reload everything when I get home ![]() |

I saw mention of this once before, the switch had come loose, but was easy to re-attach if you're willing to take your reader apart. I wouldn't be, frankly, so I'm glad you pursued a replacement. The books you bought from Sony, you can re-download to your new Reader once you activate it to your account. You won't "lose" any books.

Just found this forum otherwise I'd have been posting about my broken switch on the 6th September.
Having only received it two days before, I'd inserted my memory cards (SD & MS both pre-loaded with PDF books in eager anticipation) and started a Stephen King short story. After about 90 minutes total reading use I was underwhelmed to find that the darn thing no longer turned on and off! I wound up sending it off to Sony for repair (gotten attached to the serial number plus it looked like it was going to be the quickest option as it was the first few days of the UK launch). The switch is now fixed & still working (panicing looks around for wood to knock on ![]() Just got other 'issues' that I'm searvhing for solutions for (best get looking deeper on the forum then) Chris |

I thnk mine was a result from being knocked round in my bag (although I try to keep it safe in there. I'm waiting till after christmas and then will buy myself a new cover to help protect it even more (waiting till after as santa may have already bought me one!)

Quite a few people have had issues with the power switch over the years. When generally happens is that one end of the spring which tensions it becomes "unhooked". It can be reattached with a little care.

can you give more information about how to re-attach the switch?
i just started having some problems with mine, i'm using my damaged reader while waiting for my new one to come in Jan. I looked at it more carefully just now and noticed that the top of the reader where the switch is bulges slightly and the cover does not fit well anymore and pops off easily, which suggests to me that some change of shape as gone on! i've read on the forum, how tough the reader is generally, but mine just seems disintegrating in front of me! is there anyway to switch on and off the reader without having to go through the switch? thanks.
