Absolute beginner confused Help!

Hi all,

Absolute beginner here, I want to install Koreader to view pdf files on my Kindle. This is my primary purpose as I got heaps of publications to read through for my thesis work.

Pretty please some expert could go through bellow and tell me what went wrong on the way to the installation (please in laymen terms) as I cannot figure out how to install Koreader.

I have a Kindle touch Wifi (Kindle 5) and jailbroke it with kindle-jailbreak-1.14.N & the message Jail break appear on the screen. However on device settings->device info still showing the firmware version as Kindle 5.3.7. If its jail broken isn't this should be the name of the custom software?

Next I followed this link
https://github.com/koreader/koreader...Kindle-devices and installed the KPV Booklet. Device restarted on its own and still giving me the Kindle's default book list view. I cannot see any launcher.

Then I downloaded koreader-kindle-arm-linux-gnueabi-v2015.11-stable.zip from the github link and the unziped it. There were three folders 1. koreader and 2.extensions->3. koreader

Then I copied everything from 1. koreader into the Kindle root directory and unplugged the device to see I cannot find an option on settings menu to install it or any launcher to launch it. Update your kindle is disabled.

Please help

Many thanks

No I installed KPV Booklet because the git page Koreadre says

"Besides the reader itself, you will also need to install a launcher. For that purpose, you can use KPVBooklet or KUAL, or even both."

So I installed only KPV Booklet believe both are launchers and either should be fine. Please clarify if I'm wrong.

Thanks

I could be wrong but are you presuming that installing KPV Booklet or KUAL is like installing a different launcher in Android, in that it changes the way your default home screen looks? I can't speak for KPV but KUAL doesn't do that. It installs a document or booklet that brings up a menu when opened, which would list KO Reader.

Jailbreaking doesn't install a custom ROM so that's why the firmware is still listed as the same number. Others who are more technically inclined can give more info as to what the jailbreak installs.

Unzip the archive for KO Reader as is into the root of your Kindle, leaving the folders as is.

Also, don't put your full serial number out there. Easiest way to get your device blacklisted by Amazon.

Yes you are correct and I'm thinking it as android launchers. I'll try it with KUAL as you said. Will remove the serial

Thank you.

I put the KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2 in documents directory and then unzip the KOreader into the root when I unplug and open KUAL it shows 2 buttons KUAL.1 and Quit. When I select KUAL.1 it says No extensions found.

You need "koreader-kindle-arm-linux-gnueabi-v2015.11-stable.zip" from this page:
https://github.com/koreader/koreader...2015.11-stable

In that ZIP archive, there are two directories: koreader and extensions. Did the contents of the extensions directory in the zip file get copied to the extensions directory in the root of your kindle?

It's been awhile since I used koreader but I believe the KPVbooklet simply allows one to open EPUBs and other file types (?) from the home screen.

@LivingLegend:

So:

1) KUAL = Kindle Launcher = active content = special kind of "book" = goes into "documents" folder >> appears on Kindle's home screen / Cover View as a book with "active" flag on bottom of cover (if you don't see it after copying the azw2 file make sure that the filter is set to "All items" and not "Books")

2) KUAL uses extensions system, you add extensions (add extra buttons to KUAL GUI) by adding some folders with files to "extensions" folder (which is NOT inside the "documents" folder but is in the same level [= both folders are in Kindle drive's root].

So, you unpack the "koreader" subfolder from "extensions" folder inside archive you downloaded form KOReader's Github page to "extensions" folder on Kindle drive.

3) The downlaoder archive contains "koreader" folder containing bunch of files (= that is the actual KOReader Linux app, the other "koreader" folder is just KUAL buttons definition). You unpack that to the same level (drive root) with "documents" and "extension" folders.

To read the PDF/epub/whatever book you've copied to your Kindle you open KUAL/Kindle Launcher "book", go to "Koreader" submenu/ press the button, and choose whichever option you want (open the last book you've read or open file manager and browse the file-system to find and open some new book). Hint: you don't have to copy books you plan to read with KOReader to "documents" folder of your Kindle, the files can be anywhere on Kindle drive. I personally prefer not to have my PDF visible in Cover view because I don't read them using Kindle's default PDF reader. Also I've never bothered with trying "KPV Booklet" instead of KUAL.

Even non absolute beginner users from one time to another forget how to do it. Why doesn't the KOReader User Guide tell you EXACTLY how to install?
