How to use Series

Hi all,

Could anyone share some guidance on how Series Number is intended to be used? Should books within a series be numbered 1,2,3, ... or 1.1,1.2,1.3, ... ? Or doesn't it really matter? (My eReader is a Kobo Libra 2.)

Supplementary question, is there any plug-in or built-in feature that can provide a listing of obviously missing books within a given series name? Say if numbers 1, 2,and 4 are present (or 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, depending how people use the numbering).

Thanks. Merry Christmas.

I use integers for the main books in a series and fractional numbers for novellas, prequels, etc. One exception is when I have an omnibus where I use the first book as the integer and the last book as the fraction.

For instance, in the In Death series, 23 would be Memory in Death, 23.5 would be Haunted in Death (a novella) and 24 would be Born in Death. For an omnibus which was books 3 to 6, the series index would be 3.06. For prequels, in the Valkyrie Bestiary series (which my wife likes), there are 3 prequels which I have numbered as 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75.

Joyeux Noël!

Same as David.
Knowing that ALL solutions have some place they fall apart
8-10 will show as 8.1 (any even decade)
Just be consistent as possible and understand when you do see the exception.
Another fail is Gaps in the omnibus 6 + 9
That is where you might want to put a note in the Jacket ({comments} becomes the Jacket page )

I use whole numbers, not decimals.

I number the books in the series according to the story timeline, not publishing timeline. So for a lot of my series, my numbering does not match what is stamped on the book cover, or on sites like GoodReads.
(why would you read in publishing order when, say, book 3 is the prequel)

Authors (timeline) order, not as published (although SOME do align).
Some are 'deleted scenes', originally removed to fit publishers specs.
Some seem to be the backstory for a character that grabbed fans attention.

Ruth?

Take the Pern books. there are 'Cycles' within the Universe, some are written interleaved with others. Then there was the short 'weyr search' and another (can't remember the name ) which was almost the same story, just from the other POV

Same as David and Ducks.

I get the "official" numbers from various "X books in order" sites, which will usually include decimals for novellas, short stories, etc. I also use those for compilations. (So a compilation of books 1-15 might be labeled as 15.1. Of course, there's no point keeping the previous books if I have the compilation.)

Thanks all very much for the valuable advice. This forum is amazing.

And the Quality Check plugin is perfect for finding gaps in series. Many thanks BetterRed.
