Is multiple users possible in Koreader?

Is it possible to add a second user profile on Koreader? In other words, can two people use the same e-book reader in Koreader with different profiles? (differ notes, differ highlighting, etc.)

Hi. Nope, is not possible unless the OS provides facilities to deal with users and switch betweeen them (like Linux, MacOS). In that case it is already the default behaviour.

AFAIK we don't support multiuser in Android, or at least it wasn't tested.

And, as a feature request, I would say also no. It is a major PITA. The entire program was designed to run the way it runs and implementing multiuser profiles while preserving compatibility is too much work with no real benefit.

It should be waaay easier, albeit hackier, just to have two different instances of the program on two different directories of your ereader and start one or the other based on the user.

Hackier, in this context, is good. Have fun.

This. Especially on Kobo, where we implicitly support this because of the long and varied history of launchers, which weren't always using the same base directory .

TL;DR: Just spin another NickelMenu entry to launch another KoReader copy living in another folder.

Thank you both. If there is enough disk space for a library, of course your suggestion makes sense.

You don't need two copies of your books. Just one.
You're also need to change defaults in Settings -> document -> book metadata location. By default document metadata is stored in sidecar directories. You want to avoid that if multiple "accounts" are accesing the same documents.

Just select centralized metadata, so each user has its own track of position, highlights, notes, etc.

The program, uncompressed, weights less than 100MB, so having two different copies shouldn't be too bad for your storage capabilities.

Thank you very much. This is the solution I was looking for.

Though I'd simply buy another Kobo for the other person. I think an ereader or phone is more personal than a Personal Computer or Tablet.

Still, that's a neat solution for KOReader. Could have three set up differently for fiction, reference and projects/research/proofing.
