The original Kobo Glo - new firmware causes USB connection to crash?

Hi everyone,

I have an old Kobo Glo which I purchased in early 2014. It has been my trusty companion ever since, especially when travelling. Didn't really thought about ditching it since it simply was working, no problem whatsoever during all these years.

So, having returned from the vacation earlier this year, I turned on the WiFi and was informed about a firmware update. I have updated the Glo at least 15 times in the past without any problem, so I clicked "Proceed" button with confidence. The firmware update had been successfully completed, so I connected it to my laptop to sideload some more books which I had purchased (I use Linux & Calibre.). All of suden, Calibre wasn't able to find the Glo!

I tried to cycle through different versions of Linux & Calibre but each Linux version I tried had been berfing out similar USB errors:
usb 2-3.1: Device not responding to setup address.
usb 2-3.1: device not accepting address 12, error -71

Having read through the forums and tried multiple USB cables and computers, I determined that the problem was with the Glo itself, most likely USB port was damaged.

However, I decided to perform a factory reset just to be sure. It has not helped at all. So, the Glo has been sitting idly in a drawer until I decided it to give it one go. I charged it and turned on the WiFi only to be notified about another firmware update (4.30.138838). I installed it and... The USB port finally came to life! I was able to connect the Glo to my computer and sideload my library.

Then I decided to purchase more books and sideload them right away. So, I connected it the Glo to my laptop and guess what... " Device not responding to setup address."

Has anyone faced a similar problem? It seems to be a firmware problem, perhaps a driver crashing on the Glo. Are there any options to enable telnet without a working USB connection to see what's going on on the Glo? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to revive my Glo to be able to sideload books?

Not Glo, but Kobo Mini, FW 4.30 (for Kobo Glo, manually install) from pgaskin.net. No problem with USB and Calibre. Win7 32bit, Calibre 3.48 with driver KoboTouch 2.5.1 and try to support new firmware option (You check this option or use Calibre 5.32 with new Kobo driver with support 4.30?).

I pinpointed the problem - micro USB connector on the Glo went bad. Everything works like it used to after soldering a new one, case closed.

Re Calibre version - I don't use extended Kobo support (collections etc.), I just use Calibre to conveniently manage my offline collection and to sideload selected epubs to my Glo. I don't purchase books from Rakuten since it doesn't have a store in my country.
