I have a folder called "Dummies ebooks" I have been using the "Series" to mark all them ebooks as "Dummies" and then depending on the ebooks title volume I re number the ebooks.
Example I have a ebook called "Jewelry Making & Beading for Dummies" 2nd edition. author is Heather Dismore and then I name the series "Dummies" and then where it says Number I use (2) because its the 2nd edition. Next I use the "Tags" from the comment section and then for the "Genres" I use "Crafts.Jewelry" I also have Crafts for knitting and a few other things as well. But that is how I use "series" should I keep them "Dummies" or should I use more keywords like "Dummies Crafts" and then "dummies Cooking" or is "Dummies" okay. I normally just make sure the titles and authors are correct but lately I have been adding stuff like "Tags" and I recently added the "Genre" settings as well. |

It's your library, so up to you. If you find "Dummies Cooking" more useful, do that.
Note that you can set series to a hierarchical column (Preferences > Look & Feel > Tag Browser > Books with Hierarchical Items) and do something like Dummies.Dummies Cooking. I experimented with this a while back but decided against it. Also personally I just use a series index of 0 whenever it's non-chronological (e.g. my collection of Golden Guides). Is there a way to automatically remove all of the "Numbers" I noticed you have (0) for yours is there away to automatically do this for all my ebooks or to remove the numbers all together. I do have some different version or editions but that can be organized by date from which it was published plus some times the titles have the edition numbers. |

I believe it should be possible on existing series with a search & replace. Also, go to Preferences > Tweak and look for "Auto increment series index." Last edited by ownedbycats; 10-16-2021 at 04:49 PM. |

I download ebooks from "Firefox" and then move them from "Downloads" to "Documents" I have the "Dummies Ebooks" in there own folder called "Dummies" and then once I get done editing the ebooks for "Dummies" I then save the finished project to "Dummies Ebooks" and then I delete the originals from ""Dummies" that way I don't have multiple of the same files on my PC. And then once all the "Dummies Ebooks" get edited I will be moving them to a "USB Flash Drive" and then removing them from my PC all together. I plan to do the same for my "Ebooks" but I am still working on my "Dummies" currently. I have just started using "Genres" and I wish to organize my saved ebooks by "Genre" and I learned how to save them from a web search that pointed me to a forum post on this site but I think I did something incorrectly. When I go to the folder where my ebooks was saved to the files are all wrong. For example "Documents>"Dummies Ebooks">"Health">"Exercise & Fitness" there should be (2) folders in here named "Low-Calorie Dieting for Dummies - Susan McQuillan" and then "Calorie Counter for Dummies, The - Rust & Meri Raffetto" and then inside each folder should be the "OPF, JPG, PDF." but nope there not in there own folders. Which sucks. |

I do know one person who uses calibre to clean up metadata, do any edits, etc. but then uses save to disk to save them outside calibre. She does not like the idea that a program is forcing her to use it's directory structure when she can arrange her files in a "superior" fashion and calibre is "so slow" compared to her ability to browse a directory structure.

I will admit to having trouble understanding how (or even why) the OP (DawnDawn88) is using calibre given that part of the message #5 in this thread read:
Quote:
What I have trouble grokking is why generating a directory structure outside calibre's library is considered desirable when calibre's sort and search capability makes spending the time on any directory structure a waste of time. Especially when such a directory structure is liable to crash and burn when the paths and filenames get too long. One example from that post uses a minimum of 117 characters plus the length of the username plus the length of the filenames inside the final folder. C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Dummies Ebooks\Health\Exercise & Fitness\Calorie Counter for Dummies, The - Rust & Meri Raffetto\<insert filenames here> |

The only reason I can think of is that Dawn mentioned a USB drive and deleting them from disk. But in that case, wouldn't it also work to make a separate library for the Dummies books and just drop that on the USB drive? So far as I know, external drives are ok; it's NAS you want to avoid.

Okay first of all I was only going to try to use "Genre" save folders for the "Dummies" ebooks to make it easier for me to organize he "How To" ebooks. But since I don't use the "Calibre" to open ebooks or to hold the ebooks currently using the original folder saving options might be best. Until I start using the program to actually hold and open the ebooks.
the only reason I was using the "Genre save" was so it was easier to find Dummies ebooks based on "genre" without needing to open "Calibre". And then I was going to move the "Genre Folders" to my tablet so the tablet was going to be organized by "Genre Folders" rather then ebooks. Example all Crafting ebooks would be int here own folder and such. But I don't think that will be needed though since I can use "Tags" on the "app" I use on my tablet. Currently I only read manga and each title is a folder and then each chapter is a "CBZ" so I don't need to worry about "Tags" or "Genre" I do like the "tags" and "Genre" on the left side of "Calibre" but I currently only use "calibre" to edit the ebooks information to be moved to my tablet. and I have not yet moved any ebooks to the tablet. So I have a 10" tablet with several manga titles and 2 other tablets a fire tablet and a onn tablet. I wold like to place all of my "Dummies" on one tablet and then all my other ebooks on another tablet. Since I don't use the tablets for anything else other then that. So I think I will go back and just use "Tags" for the apps and then use "Genre" for when I start using the "calibre" on my laptop once I start using my desktop as a media PC. I don't use my laptop for read currently only my tablet. So I am still working on different ways to save and organize my files on my PC. And I was thinking that organizing the "Dummies" ebooks by "Genre" would be easier since I don't use "Calibre" to find or organize my ebooks and only for edit tags and metadata. Once I start using my laptop as a read PC then calibre will be a bigger help to me but currently I use my tablet. So for right now I will be switching back to the original way of saving ebooks once there editing. I hope this makes a bit of sense. |
