Problem with old Kindle

For years I have been using Calibre on my various Macs in connection with my Kindles (circa 2007). But now I all of a sudden have a major issue:
PREVIOUSLY: when ever I connected my Kindle(s) to my Mac while running the Calibre app, the main window of the app showed a column (the first column) which indicated if the specific book was also on the attached device.
NOW: That column is missing and there does not seem to be any kind of link between the Calibre app running on the Mac (MacBook Pro, 2020) and the connected Kindle. Without this connection I can no longer move books to and from my Kindle.
ANYBODY have an idea what happened, and how I can fix the problem?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Does Finder or System Report show your Kindle as connected? If it doesn't show up as connected, calibre will not be able to connect. Have you tried different USB ports and cables?
