What would cause Calibre to lose database changes on exit?

Sometime on Friday, I built from source and launched Calibre. I've had it running since then I think.

Today, I closed Calibre in order to pull some new fixes. Upon restarting I found that all the database changes I made since Friday had disappeared (including several new books that were still in the library files).

I don't run on NAS or cloud storage. I checked the database and there were no errors. I'm currently running a restore database from the OPFs in the hopes that it'll put things back.

No changes to my security software; if this month's Windows Update changed anything security-wise, I would have expected I'd see the issue before now.

Also no indications that it's a drive issue, but I'll have to do a proper scan later.

After closing Calibre, did you immediately shutdown the OS too? If so it may not have had time to write out changes from memory to disk.

No. I don't reboot very often.

I did notice that the OPFs seem to have the correct last modified dates. So hoping restore database fixes things. It's taking a while.

I'll test to see if it happens again once that's done.

Have you used the Last Modified plugin?

Perhaps this is relevant: apsw.ThreadingViolationError and cache.write_lock

I do use it. I think I updated to the fixed version but I'll have to double-check.

EDIT: Database restoration finished; it did fix my metadata. As for Last Modified, I downloaded the new version but forgot to install it. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

SECOND EDIT: I asked.

Another possibility, though it does feel a bit far-fetched to me:

Could accidentally unplugging a device* while sending metadata to it break the Calibre database? I checked my Kobo's db and it was fine so I didn't think much of it.

*I've been having a few connectivity issues, and I had a brain-fart and didn't realize it had connected. I'm an idiot sometimes.

No device issues can possibly affect the calibre database.
