Kindle Paperwhite Storage

Just bought a Sage PW (10th Gen) which is supposed to have 8GB storage but when I check under storage management it only shows 6GB? This is on first start up without any books on it - Used: 274MB Free: 5.97GB. Does the kindle take up 2GB for firmware etc? If so I'd expect it to show as 8GB with the used amount as 2GB.

If you dig around on Amazon to the actual specs of the devices, it is mentioned that approximately 6gb is available to the user.

Thanks although it is a bit misleading, especially if you have to dig around to find that out.Working in IT makes me suspicious when I don't see the amount of storage I should see

I think, but am not positive, that the "space available to user" blurb used to be right on the Kindle's product page in the tech details chart.

Amazon has made so many changes to the site it's difficult to keep up.

The 6GB is the size of the partition visible to the user not the size of the entire storage device.

I have 75 books on my Paperwhite and still have 6.05 of storage left. I only put books on it when I thing I am going to need them. I hate clutter and that also goes for my ereader.

A different approach from mine. I upgraded the storage in my Clara HD to 64GB and stuffed my entire 13,000 ebook calibre library onto it just to see how it behaved. I keep about 2-3,000 ebooks on my main ereader.

I have a huge Calibre library too, I upload to my Kindle as needed. I also have a reasonably large Amazon cloud library too. I have seen way too many kindle reader crashes and reloads. So I now only keep a manageable number on my kindles. Different kindle for different reading desires

As I said, the Clara HD storage extension was more or less me playing with the device. Given that most books are less than a two hour read, I like to keep a fair selection of books on my main ereader to give me a selection of potential re-reads. As mentioned elsewhere, my TBR pile is pretty much non-existent.

Playing with my ereaders over the years, I have managed to have quite a few crashes, some of which required a full factory reset. The price you pay for playing with your toys.

Well I don’t have time to play with my reader, am too busy reading ebooks. That is what they are designed for and that is what I use them for.

Not sure if I want to spend that much more time on reading ebooks. The last monthly report I got said I spent 162.99 hours reading with 26,903 page flips and 89 books read.

Yes, they are designed for reading but they are such fun toys that I can't resist the temptation to play with them.

As mentioned, it's got a couple different partitions. The 6GB FAT formatted is what we see when connected to computer via USB.

Actual OS is on a Linux partition (never really bothered checking the format).
