ebook file types to keep
Hi! I'm in the process of consolidating all my ebooks to kindle.
I use the calibre ebook converter to convert to MOBI files for some books, but wondered do I need to keep the original epub file as well as opf and jpeg (for book cover)? Or can I just keep the new MOBI file and delete the rest? Many thanks! |

Keep original epubs and covers. Thousands of books is less than 1 DVD.

Calibre uses the to display the cover. Also the OPF files are used to help recreate the database if it ever becomes corrupted. And as ePub is the source format, then you should keep the format you paid for. Last edited by JSWolf; 06-21-2021 at 02:27 PM. |

IMHO Keep the cover IF different from what is embedded. Publishers change them all the time.
Sometimes they even do get better. ![]() (One of the first tasks I did using calibre, was to document my paperback collection. It was amazing how many covers downloaded, by ISBN, DID NOT match my physical copy. Luck had it, I had a flatbed scanner handy. ) |

I've bought paper books thinking it was one I didn't have to discover that only the cover was different. Some books have less memorable titles.
I also have bought books (in town) identical to ones I have. Maybe I have 3000+ paper books. I keep meaning to catalogue them. I even have a real book lending library program I wrote over 25 years ago. It copes with multiple copies and editions of the same title+author. The ISBN/EAN/UPC barcode, if printed, is only used to help add it. Each item then got a different format code that was merely a unique database serial number. One could now use QR codes so that if the database was lost the title, author, edition & copy could be scanned rather than re-typed. Or you could make a backup! |

Just reinforcing JS Wolf's point that it's far far better to convert to azw3 if the book is intended for a kindle. You can use custom fonts with this format, among its other advantages.
