Smile News on first Cobalt SmartPhone

GSPDA to Make the First Palm OS Cobalt Smartphone (Brighthand)

Quote:
For the first time, a company has said it will definitely release a Cobalt device before the end of this year.

Over the weekend, Group Sense PDA (GSPDA) made a presentation of its latest smartphone, the Xplore M68, to the Paris PUG.

At this, Tim Wong, GSPDA's General Manager of Business Development, was asked if his company was going to release a smartphone running Cobalt. Mr. Wong responded by saying that not only will GSPDA release a Palm OS Cobalt smartphone, it will be the first company to do so.

Mr. Wong did not give an estimated time for when this device will be released, but he did say it would be before the end of this year.

He also said that while GSPDA will release the first smartphone with Cobalt, some other company may release a Cobalt handheld first.
Well, it's about time! The last statement is tantalizing, to say the least. Maybe PalmOne is developing a Cobalt-based PDA after all.

First Cobalt device announced

Engadget mentions this too: what the hell is the deal with Cobalt?? It's been out for almost a year and no one has picked it up, not even PalmOne. PalmOne won't even be using it before next year... Is something wrong with it? We've discussed this here before, but I think it's ripe for more discussion. Why isn't anyone using Cobalt? Why didn't Zodiac pick it up? What about the T|5?

GSPDA is shooting itself in the foot by preannouncing an in-development Cobalt device, now most people will hold getting a M28 and wait for that device...GSPDA get nothing for preannouncing, if it was Palmsource, it would have been understandable...

The expected release date of GSPDA's phone is in line with what PalmSource themselves had predicted at their Munich conference last September when they made OS 6.1 available to their licensees: that the first SmartPhones running Cobalt would appear in late 2005.
