Exactly. Use the device as is, see what YOU like and dislike and only then make changes.

Do experiment with calibre and the KoboTouchExtended drivers and try both side loaded epubs and kepubs

Thanks @davidfor and @PeterT for the excellent advice. I am sure that the standard Kobo reader will be sufficient for reading my books but since I will be reading some PDF files I was interested to learn what people say about things like the KOReader which seems more suitable for the job...
