Sees books with same name but different authors as "duplicates".

I loaded up my entire collection into Calibre 5.17.0 to check for duplicates because I'd downloaded a bunch of updated books and ran them through to get the metadata, but in some cases the filename it gave the revised book didn't match the old, so the old didn't get over written when I copied the new editions to my books folder.

It found four. Two were actually duplicates while two others had the exact same title but were by different authors. One pair of "duplicates", the authors just happen to have the same first name but different surnames and the stories are completely different. "Maelstrom" by Peter Cawdron and "Maelstrom" by Peter Watts. The other is "Convergence" by C.J. Cherryh and "Convergence" by Alex Albrinck.

Is there any way to make it read the author metadata when importing so it doesn't get false duplicates based just on the titles?

An odd convergence that two guys named Peter would choose the same title.

Not that I know of.

But you should have gotten a popup something like this, which lets you bail out of the Add books operation :

I avoid the situation by adding to a usually empty Intake library, after making any 'critical' metadata adjustments I use the Find Duplicates->Find library duplicates against the target library and if necessary the CalibreSpy plugin to examine the target library duplicates.

What BR said.

Remember Find Duplicates (PI) has an option to mark misidentified titles as Ignore.
These are all 'tools' you can use, not the final say. That is your job
