Courier New should be installed because then when the CSS calls for monospace, you will get monospace.

Courier is so-so font ...
But the firmware looks for a font name starting with Courier when monospace is called for. I'm just mentioning it since this thread is about monospace fonts.

Just find a Courier font that you like and install that and monospace will work without the need for the patch.

Presently I'm reading about 5 hours a day; I tried to use a monospace font to reduce eyestrain and to get a fluent read with the text neatly and spread on a grid, and it worked well.
I like JetBrains Mono and Arial mono, and seem good. Anyhow the opinion of designers and developers is fundamental for me

you can rename any font to Courier if you don't want to use the patch (using FontLab or FontForge for example). The name of the font is completely unimportant, do not mislead users. This can be easily corrected. And the font should be chosen not by name, but by taste.

This is true, but for some, it's just easier to fond a Courier font font family.

Courier New is awful (spindly, very thin). Much better versions of Courier are Courier Prime and Courier Screenplay. Both are free, and you can get them here (scroll down to "Fonts"):

It's my mistake. I don't have Courier New installed. I have Courier Prime installed.

So I should have said Courier Prime instead.
