Battery Life Comparison Across Models
So, there seems to be a discrepancy between the promoted battery life between charges and the real world results for some models.
If anyone with real-life results for any of these would like to chime in, it would be appreciated... it's starting to sound like a number of these are still in the "experimental realm" rather than reliable to the numbers. I'm looking for IN-USE vs STANDBY
Really considering the 7.8" models. Kobo Libra and Forma I'm pretty sure can't be touched. If the Androids are dying off as fast as some reports, then it might not be worth the extra $$ my my needs. I'm not buying to have the latest gadget and replace if dead or a new one comes out. I'm looking for "one" working unit to expectations advertised (if it exists, as I realize a lot of these are still basically experimental in nature.) |

The androids live just as long as other EInk devices / smartphones / tablets / .... Screen discoloration like the Likebook Mars is also found on the Kobo Aura One. Android devices can do a lot more than stupid readers, but they also need more power - that's all. And only if you don't have any sockets can you think about the power consumption of a device. |

There have been a number of posts in this forum, and elsewhere.
You have even posted your Ares is a power hog. Question and concern remains. You buy a device expecting weeks power and get days.., the answer is not to find a wall socket. Of course I can appreciate android requires more power, but one doesn't expect exponential differences. Thanks, but still looking for users' in here actual experiences. I should have clarified...
If using both a Kobo Libra/Forma and a Nova or Ares IN THE SAME WAYS, that is, mainly as a reader, how does battery life between charges compare ? (using things like note taking on the androids affects battery use how bad?) I'm not going to be using things like Youtube... Maybe occasional browser based editing... Nothing more. |

There are just as many deaths in other electronic devices. Quote:
The Ares consumes a lot and I don't know why (maybe because of the screen with the sun bug) - that's why I only turn it on when I work with it (exclusively) on the go (because of its handy size and weight) and I turn it off when not. And when I come home, it is plugged in so that it is fully charged the next time I use it. For standard (at home) work in portrait format I use the Alita or in landscape format the Boox Note Air - they stay switched on and in idle mode when I am not using them. For reading I use a 6 inch Boox Poke 3 - so I can read for about 50 hours (according to a report). With these devices, I don't care about the consumption, when I see that there is only a little battery capacity left, then they are plugged into the socket. And I don't keep a book about it either - I don't care at all. And your question about: Quote:

But why the Ares needs so much more, I don't know. By the way: I see an indication of device death in the $$ comment |

That's the thing. I'm looking to use an Ares differently than you -- as my daily eReader.
So, a big difference in battery life, or needing to keep plugged in is not what I'm looking for in a device. I was hoping to discover if this was a common issue in the Ares or not. I guess it would have helped to post specifically in the Likebook section, just the Ares/Mars maybe. Off to do that now. Thanks. (ps- yeah, not interested in spending near $400 for a device that drains really fast, especially if others don't, that's what I was saying) |

FORGET THIS THREAD.
Perhaps a simple generalization may explain - Kobo lasts weeks of reading, Android E-Ink still only lasts day. This is more an Ares/mars question and moved appropriately. Thanks Last edited by jgbout; 03-14-2021 at 11:29 AM. |

Android EInk is much more powerful and therefore needs more power, but has much more powerful batteries built in, so that the consumption time is pretty much the same. And since the battery capacity mainly depends on the volume and weight, Android devices are a bit more voluminous and heavier. |

Just for another fun comparison, the Likebook Ares Notes weighs in at 295 grams while a new iPad Mini weighs in at 300 grams with a 19.1 WH (5000 mAH) battery. The Likebook Ares Note is available from Amazon.ca for $672.99 Cdn with 32GB storage while the iPad Mini clocks in at $529 Cdn for 64GB or $729 Cdn for 256GB (ouch!). The Ares display is 7.8", 1404x1872 with 16 greys while the iPad Mini display is 7.9", 1536x2048 with a P3 wide colours profile. |

Haha, I sense someone likes the Ipad Mini.
Thanks David, your comments are in line with what I've been reading not just in here but in other places and store reviews on the internet. As long as a person knows you only get 5 days charge in light use for an Ares, they can decide if it's something for them personally or not. Same as the forma. I do wish you got a little more juice and function for the battery time with the Likebooks, but I guess you don't. And I'm not interested in bumping up to a Boox Nova. If there was a way to get the great PDF support on a Forma that you do with an Android device... Maybe with KOReader. I'm just frustrated on my Libra that an expanded PDF though it retains it's wider text it repositions an inch down and to the right with every page turn. Thanks again David. |

I don't own an iPad Mini but do have a iPad Pro supplied by my employer. What I find funny is that most if not all of the Android eInk devices lose the light weight and long battery life of the Linux based eInk readers. Without those advantages, I might as well go for the faster, full colour display of an Apple or Android tablet.

A lot of chess books are in pdf, but there's large margins.
And I'd like to avoid using a backlit screen for the older eyes... I'm checking now to see if there's an android or chromeos app for K2PDFOPT, thanks. For removing the margins, do you find K2PDFOPT better than KOReader? |

As far as I am aware, K2PDFOPT is a Windows/MacOS offering. The latest version on a M1 Mac is fast. |
