Possible to upgrade Android on a Poke?

I own an Onyx Boox Poke running Android 4.4.4.

Today, Pocket announced that they're ending support for 4.4.4. Pocket is one of my most-used apps.

I'd love to keep this device working with Pocket. Is there any way to upgrade Android? I imagine I'd have to root this and possibly unlock the bootloader. Can it be done?

I haven't seen an Android upgrade on Onyx Boox devices yet.

Yes you could but it is very risky. You have to get a compatible Android version for your Poke and then flash it. I personally would not try to upgrade Android. If Pocket is the app that you want to keep using, you can just sideload it (and other apps if you want) with adb.

Why would you need to sideload the app? As long as you don't delete it, you won't lose it.

Apps which need internet can check on server side installed app version to show a "please update app" nag screen and app does close then. You lost your app!
With an old android you can't update in play store, because Android doesn't fulfill minimum framework version.
When you sideload via Aurora Store you can download app but you can't install because Android doesn't fulfill the needed framework again.
You are trapped.
Most framework request are fake because no newer function is used in app which doesn't exist in older ones. It is just a "we don't want to bother with costumers with older tablets".
Sometimes editing manifest.xml does help to install app as normal.

AFAIK Onyx Boox Poke runs Android 6 not Android 4.4.4. Could you check it again?

EDIT: You are right, only Poke Pro runs Android 6. Poke runs Android 4.4.4.

It's very likely that Onyx Poke will stick to Android 4.4.4. If you want to download the last version of Pocket, you can download v7.37.0.0 from apkmirror.

Still Stuck

Thanks everyone for your advice ITT. Unfortunately, I'm still stuck. I deleted and reinstalled the Pocket app and now can't login. Here's what I've tried:
  • Sideloading a Pocket APK from APK Mirror (tried this with multiple versions)
  • Downloading Pocket from Google Play store
  • Downloading Pocket from Onyx's built-in app store
  • Logging in manually AND logging in via Google in all the ways above

The result is always the same: A pop-up that reads "Oops, something went wrong. Please try again later." or "Could not login. There was a problem connecting to Pocket." (The message changed depending which version of Pocket I use.)

But here's something strange:
When I click the "Get Help" link for more info, I'm directed to this page. While this page loads fine here on my desktop, on my Poke it just returns an ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR. Why would my tablet get an SSL error while attempting to access Pocket's website? And could that be related to my inability to login?

In a Hail Mary, I've contacted Onyx and asked them to release the code for its kernels/drivers for this device, so that the developer community could write its own updated Android. I won't hold my breath for that.

Yes you shouldn't. I guess it has been requested by many people and failed.

Not sure if this link helps. But I guess it's worth trying.
