Features / problems with new Firmware 3.1 and Neoreader

PRO
- the ePub has a better support of publisher CSS

- the ePub is "paginated" and not "re-paginated" every time you use TOC (this is VERY good for handwritten notes)

- the "link" new feature for connect words from an ePub to another ePub (or document) or to a web page is interesting

CONS

- Neoreader fails to open a lot of ePub with a generic error

- If the ePub has embedded fonts there are problems:
+ all the words with accents (èéùàòì) are showed in a different font and with a wrong kerning
+ the embedded font is often rendered in a wrong way (italic instead normal; too dark; if bold: "very too dark"; different from the embedded one; some family seems to be missing (for example monospaced); and counting...)

- The hyphenation is wrong for italian language. If I select to toggle the hyphenation, Neoreader only remove the "-" symbol in the hyphenated words...

- the SVG images are not visible

- there is a big problem with internal links: when I follow a internal link Neoreader SOMETIMES re-paginate the ebook (sigh: this is not good when someone is taking handwritten notes...) and, after a jump inside the ebook, Neoreader SOMETIMES fails to turn the pages...

- sometimes Neoreader put random newline in the middle of a paragraph

- the "new link feature" to connect a word to another ePub (or document) could be improved: actually I can not link to another section of the ePub I'm reading (a internal link) and I can not link to a specific place in another ePub, only the entire ePub...

I'm not interested in the NeoReader.
I make notes and comments in portrait format in pdf files on my Likebook Alita.
But I'm interested in Notes in landscape format under OS 3.1 - and I'm waiting for my Notes Air to finally get it.

Hi, kinda off topic, though how do you process your epubs with in-text scribed notes? e.g. you finished a book with a ton of comments. How can you see all the pages with notes?

When it works (but there are some serious problems I wrote about some days ago) you can export all the ePub with notes as PDF.

Isn't it easier to convert to pdf before editing?

Maybe. It depends. The automatic conversion from ePub to PDF could have a poor layout if the ePub is more than text or the automatic conversion could insert layout errors in pagination (table, floating images, font coding...) I can discover weeks after I made the conversion. In ePub I can adjust the font-size and margin to have the best render for the Note3, and after begin to work with handwriting note. No zoom at all.

But there is another reason: I'm not in love with PDF. It is a dirty format. I prefer the ePub, I can do more "manipulations" with this format and I'd like to support Onyx for this feature because it is very cool (when it works).

I extracted NeoReader & KNote from Nova2 firmware v3.1 (0407) and placed the file in MEGA, it includes

NeoReader (Version: 23521)
KNote (Version: 23416)
KSync (Version: 20299)
Content Browser (Launcher) (Version: 30923)
Dictionary (Version: 20591)
Floating button (Version: 20843)
App Market (Version: 20308)

You can find the firmware url of your Max Lumi (link), download the update.upx and put it in the /sdcard.

Then proceed to the Settings→Firmware update. The system should find out the firmware file and update the device for you.

The above link works for me.

Just check the firmware link again, it seems the build date is 2020-11-19_13-50_3.0_88a2f03 which shows the firmware is still 3.0. It seems to me that Onyx pulled back firmware update v3.1 for all devices except Nova3.

But I guess you can download the latest NeoReader from a few posts above and install it onto Max Lumi.

I would never use neoreader for epub. But it's excellent for pdf, and I've found no problem with it for that.

Edit: think i'm on 3.0. didnt know there was a 3.1

Chrome and Safari don't want open this link, Firefox can't complete the download. I had written to Boox (in italian because the interface was in italian)

You should check the link again. The new firmware is up now.
