Kobo Touch Setup Issues
Hello! I'm new here (first post) so please bear with me, I'm not very well-read on the technology.
I have a Kobo Touch (the original I believe) that I got back in maybe 2011. It got lost in the shuffle of my life and I recently found it again, powered it up, and thought "okay great, it still works!" Last update at the time was 2013, but all the books on it were still loading, it seemed to connect to the Internet (I had access to the Kobo store and the browser) but it would not allow me to update via wifi, so I downloaded the Kobo desktop app to see if I could get it up to date and running again. I tried downloading a few of the free books from my reader, just to see if it would work. They didn't load to the device but did appear in my Kobo account. At some point, I ended up doing a factory reset because it felt like that might solve the problem. It did not! I've been trying to no avail to set it up via the Kobo desktop app (wireless setup won't work, it finds the network, then gives me "network error, please try again"). Mostly, I get stuck in a login loop, where it takes my information, gives me a Captcha, the desktop app seems to reload (perhaps "logging me in", though I'm already logged in) then gives me the login again, then same deal, another Captcha. I've tried logging out and logging back in, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, rebooting the computer, rebooting and factory resetting the device, everything I can think of. The computer seems to recognize the device, but every time it connects to the Kobo app, the next time I plug it in, I get a "repair your device?" dialogue, even after safely removing it. I can write files to the device selectively, some give me errors, others do not, and I even tried manually loading new firmware onto the device (from a zip file, it wouldn't let me copy over some files and folders but if I manually created the folders and copied the files in individually, it seems to have worked). By some fluke, I managed to get the device set up enough that I could use it, Kobo still wouldn't load books onto it but I managed to do it with ADE. Well, I got most of the way through reading a book, then the device froze on me. In an effort to hard reboot it, I accidentally factory reset it and now I'm back to square one, Kobo desktop won't do the setup and I can't do anything with it. I'm looking for somebody to help me. Is there a better/easier/more reliable way to set up? Is there a way to stop the Captcha loop? I won't be crushed if I have to retire it, but I would love to get it back to functional of I can. Thank you so much! |

@Caito: It sounds like you have done the right things. Getting an old device working again should start with a factory reset. Setup will be done after that. The older devices will have WiFi issues as the older firmware uses older security protocols that are no longer supported (by anyone). The Kobo desktop application should be able to do the setup and put the currently available firmware on the device. You can do that yourself and then do the setup over WiFi. Just use firmware version 3.19.x or later.
But, from the problems you are having, I suspect the SD card in the device is failing. Constant file system repair requests, errors writing files and the other issues suggest this. You have already requested an image and I sent it earlier. I would suggest using a new card. You can use larger card and expand the book partition to use it.In the N905C Touch, 16GB will work and 32GB probably will, but, that can depend on the card. |
