ReadOnlyError on news fetch

It's the second time i get this error while downloading news:
Code:
ReadOnlyError: attempt to write a readonly database
I observed that the directory has the correct permissions, see the database:
drwxr-xr-x. 709 root root 32K Feb 18 10:30 calibre database
and, the calibre subdirectory:
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4.0K Feb 18 09:54 calibre

After it happened I restarted calibre, and it downloaded the news OK, but it wasnt able to see the old news already fetched!
The calibre window shows only today's (18 Oct) Economist and NY Times, but the directory content is this:
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K Feb 5 12:15 The Economist [Fri, 05 Feb 2021] (7586)
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K Feb 5 12:15 NY Times Global [Thu, 04 Feb 2021] (7584)
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K Feb 5 12:15 NY Times Global [Wed, 03 Feb 2021] (7583)
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K Feb 18 09:54 NY Times Global [Wed, 17 Feb 2021] (7593)
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K Feb 18 10:28 NY Times Global [Thu, 18 Feb 2021] (7592)
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K Feb 18 10:30 The Economist [Thu, 18 Feb 2021] (7593)

... I fear the database could be corrupt - what can I do?

Thanks!

your antivirus is probably blocking calibre, because it detected calibre is downloading things from the net.

Then check permissions on the file and directory and make sure your database is on an proper filesystem, not ntfs/fat/whatever else.

Those files belong to root
IMHO that is not a great plan to be running most things AS root

I know I know - and I wouldnt recommend it to a new linux user...
But - just allow me to say this - I use Linux since the Slackware days, and I just once (deleted /lib by mistake!) made a mess of it.
For me the ease of using root outbalances the risks - and it's been more than 20 years so far...

Filesystem is ext4.
The directory permissions, as I reported, are drwxr-xr-x, so they seem good...
I forgot to add:
metadata_db_prefs_backup.json and metadata.db, both -rw-r--r--
