possible device breaker!

Is it possible that a custom dictionary could cause my kindle/kobo to stop working?

I've had this happen twice now and seems more than a little unlucky considering how well I look after my devices - first with my Kobo Glo and now my Kindle, both have become stuck after using a custom dictionary for a few months, same dictionary on both devices.

I first noticed the Kobo acting up after I installed the custom dictionary on it, then about four weeks after that it got stuck and I've never been able to fix it.

So I switched to my Kindle, installed my books and then the custom dictionary and it began acting up in the same way as the Kobo for a few months. Before I could remove things, it has locked up. Was charging it last night until green light came on, left it overnight and now it seems bricked too. Only orange light when charging now even though was fully charged last night and if I hold and press the on/off button while it's plugged into charger, orange light goes off after about fifteen seconds but nothing else happens.

Could a custom dictionary brick a device?

I can't see a custom dictionary bricking a device but I can see it causing issues that would require a restart. Perhaps it's time to look for another dictionary?

For your Kobo Glo, have you tried a manual factory restore?
  1. Charge your Glo for at least 1 hour, preferably using a wall charger.
  2. Turn off your Glo by holding the power button to the right for 20 seconds.
  3. Press and hold the light button.
  4. While holding the light button, slide the power button to the right to turn on your Glo.
  5. Continue holding the light button until the power light blinks rapidly.
  6. Release the light button.
  7. You should see a Restoring message on the screen.

Thanks for replying.

I've left it on charge for half the day and still only orange light and won't come on.

It's a Kindle 4, by the way. D something or other. Not touch or glo version. Is there some other way to factory reset on the Kindle 4? Can't find a reset pin hole on this.

I tried the reset option but nothing changes.

The dictionary was a custom Swedish, only one I could find. I think it is THE only one online.

edit*** I think it's D01100

You happen to be talking about fairly old devices in both cases, so, might just be bad luck and failing storage devices.

(And, no, there's no magic trick for the K4 without either a working storage/minimal OS or physical access to the board, c.f., https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle4NTHacking).

Much as you shouldn't trust the battery gauge on a Kobo, you shouldn't trust the charging LED on a Kindle. It's software in both cases, and software lies to you. And/or is broken.
(Also, as far as Kindles are concerned, at least, it needs to be unplugged from a power source for the hard-reboots to take).

The Kobo was only a few years old, just out of warranty.

The Kindle - if the battery was the problem, would the orange light still come on when I tried charging it?

With your Kobo, are you running the latest firmware were adding a custom dictionary requires no patching?

The latest firmware is 4.25.15875.
