Searching Calibre Library With Alfred

Since upgrading my iMac from macos Mojave to Big Sur I have been unable to use Alfred (search utility) to find books located in my Calibre library. Alfred will locate the author folder but not the individual books (all epub).

If I create a new folder and just copy a bunch of books (and author folders) from the Calibre library folder into the new folder, Alfred finds the books as it should.

As an experiment, I created a new Calibre library and copied (through Calibre) all my books into it. Alfred was able to find all the books. However, once I closed and reopened Calibre, Alfred was not able to find my books.

Does Calibre "lock" the library in some way to prevent Alfred from finding books? Spotlight finds all books without any problem.

I am using the most recent versions of both programs.

Windows user - Calibre doesn't lock the files down (except maybe metadata.db) and I can search them fine with Everything and Agent Ransack.

However I googled and here's a few troubleshooting tips: https://www.alfredapp.com/help/troub...ting/indexing/

No there is no locking. Indeed, under macOS, unlike windows, the kernel doesnt even support file locking other than advisory/co-operative locks, which anyway calibre does not use.

Thank you for the replies. I have followed all the Alfred troubleshooting tips I can find including the above link with no resolution.

I find it so strange that the Calibre library is the only folder that Alfred is unable to discover files in. Recreating the Calibre library always allows Alfred to find files until I open/close Calibre then it is once again unable to locate books -- very weird.

I have even created the Calibre library on an external SSD with the same behavior.

In any case, thanks for the help. If anyone else has thoughts please leave a reply.

It may be something to ask the Alfred devs about (troubleshooting page suggests that).

It would be a lot easier to use Calibre to search for the eBooks ou want and then wen you find what you want, use "Save to disk" to copy them from your library.

From the documentation I linked to, Alfred also can search the file contents. Calibre can't do that (without Power Search plugin, which requires a dependency).

The Quality Check plugin can search in EPUBs, which the OP uses.

The Alfred Powerpack supports 'filters' to search content, guessing they are something like Windows Search IFilters. Alfred's Powerpack costs £29.00, couldn't find any info on what filters exist or whether they cost extra.

There are Windows Ifilters that will index zip contents, and yes there is one for ePubs, and yes it is free.
