Does anybody know of a dictionary that doesn't do this?
The dictionary would define a word as being a derivative of said word. Like it's supposed to help?
I've tried oxford and the new oxford so far, and they do the same thing. |

I think most dictionaries would do this, requiring you to look up the stem word. For what it's worth, this is the entry for decrepitude" in the full Oxford English Dictionary:
The state or condition of being decrepit; a state of feebleness and decay, esp. that due to old age. |

It is curious that the definition on the shorter Oxford is so brief. The definition in the OED is more complete and still very short. The definition the Shorter Oxford gives of "decrepit" is fine. Odd. |

I guess Oxford is treating word derivatives as separate words. Collin's on the other hand is stacking all derivatives into one definition. So if you want the definition for any of these words (decrepit, decrepitly, decrepitude and decrepitness) it would define the stem word, which is more helpful.

Another way of looking at it, I know what decrepit means, but not decrepitude. Only the first dictionary actually tells me that. The others explain decrepit, not decrepitude?

I have been frustrated by this electronic dictionary feature for years. In a paper dictionary, the root word would probably be right next to it, or at least on the same page. An reader doesn't let you highlight the root word and read that. So, I go find my phone and end up using google.

OMG! With the dictionary popup for a highlighted word open, tapping the three dot menu gives the "open dictionary option." And there it is.... the source of my frustration cured! Thanks j.p.s.
