Boox max original w/ no stylus?

So hit an interesting problem with a family member's original boox max - they've unfortunately lost the stylus, and are having a lot of trouble sourcing a replacement. Boox sent a triangular stylus that doesn't work, and we've also tried bamboo / intuos 3 / surface 3 models.

Now the big issue is that it's non-touch, so it's impossible to select menu options without the stylus.

I've tried
Factory reset through back/power. This now gets stuck at the "select language" screen.
Firmware update (i have no idea what version is on there). Hitting flash from external storage in recovery just throws E:unknown volume for SD card. There are old instructions around for flashing through mfgtool, but these are now dead links.
USB OTG mouse (disabled in firmware?)

Is there something obvious that I'm missing, or are there any styluses that are compatible with the original max? It was only bought second hand a few months back and is still in new condition so I'm not willing to ditch it over a missing stylus...

Any wacom stylus should work. On Max1 I tried old stylus from Pocketbook 912.

Thanks, that's what I'd thought which is why I wanted to see if a firmware update would fix it.

The bamboo & triangular styli definitely don't work on the reader, the intuos I wasn't really expecting too as it's a strange one but figured it was worth a try. It's hard finding specifics on the original max vs the newer ones, but threads https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=190524 for the older boox units do suggest not everything is as compatible as I'd assumed.

I'll run the update tonight and see if that helps anything.

The original Max and then Max Carta came with Hanvon stylus, not Wacom

Ah that would be it then! Had a lot of trouble finding info on these.

Which then leads to the next question - is it possible to buy a compatible stylus? I can't see anything for replacements locally (Australia), about the closest I can find is a NOS Hanvon Graphicpal 0806 which comes with a stylus. There's not even anything on ebay or aliexpress which is my usual go-to for these things.

Use search terms "boox n96 stylus" on aliexpress. It's the same Hanwang stylus. Or you could ask to buy in the flea market section of this website. It could be cheaper. Someone might have a spare stylus they've no use for. These are old devices after all.

Edit: Don't buy the drawing tablet one. Most likely not compatible.
