Problems with new version.
Hi all,
Don't know if anyone has had same issues, but looking for some assistance. 1) Despite having the English GB Dictionary selected in Preferences, Spell Check still defaults to Americanised spelling, and shows misspelled for just about every GB variant. 2) When I try to add words to the dictionary (Default, as I don't have personalised set up) I DO get the verification message at the bottom left of screen, but when I rerun Spell Check it comes up with the same words AGAIN still showing as misspelled. I've either not got my settings correctly configured, or it's a small bug with new version (which I've NEVER experienced in previous version, I have to say). Any advice or pointers? |

What exact version of Sigil are you using? Latest is Sigil 1.4.3 (some earlier versions did have this issue). What exact metadata code is specified in the OPF of the epub you are editing? What Primary and Secondary dictionaries have you selected in Sigil Preferences?
What OS/platform are you using? |

Hi,
I've updated to Version 1.43, on Windows 10. Primary was English GB and Secondary was left blank. I then tried Secondary set as well as Primary English GB. This didn't fix the problem, unfortunately. I'm not sure what or where to find the metadata information that you're looking for. I can see this - <metadata xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" Or (if you guide me) is there something else? Thanks |

Look in the ebook's OPF file (often called package.opf or content.opf) for a dc:language in the metadata.
Does it say "en-US" or "en_US" or something else? Also look at a few of the xhtml files and see if any xml:lang or lang attributes are set on the html tag? If so what are they so to. Last edited by KevinH; 12-21-2020 at 06:44 PM. |

@KevinH,
From the content.opf file- <dc:language>en-GB</dc:language> And from the cover.xml file- <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en-GB"> |

@Woodssi
What's your Sigil version? (Help > About...) What are your primary and secondary dictionaries? (Edit > Preferences > Spellcheck Dictionaries) What's your default metadata language? (Edit > Preferences > Language) Last edited by Doitsu; 12-22-2020 at 11:24 AM. |

Unless someone has somehow renamed the en_US dictionary to en_GB, I can not recreate this at all in Sigil-1.4.3 But I can with earlier versions of Sigil-1.4.x. Perhaps you have more than one version of Sigil installed somehow.
So please do as Doitsu suggested, please post a screenshot of the "About Sigil" dialog and a screen shot of your Sigil Dictionary Preferences dialog box just to rule that out. And a screen shot of the top of a xhtml file (not the cover) wouldn't hurt. Also, one other thing to try is to open Sigil without any epub at all and try typing text such as "colour" into the first empty page to see if the issue is somehow related to the specific epub you are editing. Something is very strange here as on my machine with Sigil 1.4.3 this just works. I live in Canada and since I have no en_CA, dictionary, I often use the provided en_GB dictionary to spellcheck Canadian English (as the overlap there is greater than the overlap with en_US). And it works just fine. KevinH |

@KevinH - As requested.
I tried about half a dozen other books, where the metadata language was set to just en, and I didn't seem to get the same problem I had with the first book. What I did find, though, is that the program was running quite slowly. When I was asking it to do anything (move between different chapter files etc.) I was getting the blue circle of death, and the 'not responding' message along the top bar for a few seconds. I have double-checked, as per your suggestion, and I can't find any previous builds on my laptop. As far as I can see, only the recently upgraded version is showing. Thanks again. |

So based on that, there is some issue that is specific to that particular epub or your system (ie interference from AV software?)
Is there any way you can post that epub someplace (privately) and PM me here (KevinH) with the link. I will use it to try to recreate the issue you are seeing and get it tracked down and fixed and then will delete my copy when the fix is in place. If not, there is a Sigil plugin (Borkify) that will replace all of the text of the epub with gibberish but not change the structure or attributes, so it can be zipped up and posted here without violating any copyright. See https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=263156 I could use that and edit the gibberish and replace it with words like "favour" and "colour" in a couple of places to try to recreate what about this epub is confusing Sigil so much. Thanks! Last edited by KevinH; 12-23-2020 at 11:08 AM. |

@KevinH,
You're absolutely right. I've checked about another dozen books at random, and I've not encountered the same Spell Check issue in any of them. Many thanks for your assistance with that. Still running very slowly though, and I'm using the same AV that I had prior to the 1.43 update. Any ideas as to how I can check what is causing the slow down? |

Even old AV can see new installs as a threat. I would try unplugging your internet connection (to be perfectly safe with no AV during this test), doing a safe reboot to prevent issues from system extensions and other non-official system software, turning off AV, then testing that epub. If no slowdown, then the issue is either your AV or some system level extension. You can then turn back on AV, plug back in internet, and reboot.
If AV there may be a way to tell it to leave Sigil alone. Many AVs constantly check new files generated in /tmp and lock the files during scans. Since Sigil uses the system /tmp directory for processing books, this causes a huge slowdown. There is a setting in Sigil to specify a different (private to Sigil) temp directory, so you might want to try that. For general slowdowns, interference from AV or installed third party system extensions is almost always the culprit. Also please supply the test epub I asked asked about so that we can track down what is causing the spellcheck issues so we can fix that for the next release. Slowdowns are typically attributed to having Preview open when huge html files with very few line endings in them (and perhaps lots of images) are open in Code View. Normal epubs with many reasonably-sized html files (<300kb) perform best.
What version of Sigil were you using before 1.4.3? Just curious, because there shouldn't really be any noticeably performance changes from version 1.3.0 to now. Qt is leaving older hardware behind (faster and faster) in general, but even so, I don't get any of the "not responding" messages or severe slowdowns you describe even on my very underwhelming (and aging) Inspiron laptop. The fact that you're using the same AV as before Sigil 1.4.3 isn't all that relevant since Sigil 1.4.3 isn't the same binary running the same code as earlier versions. Nor is Windows 10 itself the same--assuming you've not disabled mandatory updates. You should definitely try exempting Sigil (and its various folders) from your AV. And to be perfectly honest: I don't think it's necessary (or wise from a performance standpoint) to run real-time scanning AV software in addition to what comes built into Windows 10. Simultaneous real-time AV file-scanning processes are a recipe for disaster in my book. |

@KevinH
Sorry, I've never added plugins before, so it took me a little while to install, and then work out what I was doing with the epub. Hope this is correct! Last edited by KevinH; 12-24-2020 at 05:35 PM. Reason: removing it to due to text in opf and cover image |

Hi Woodsi,
That will work. I did remove it because technically there could be issues with the cover artwork (which Borkify did not change) and the description metadata in the opf. That said, the dc:language tag just says "en" and the cover image xhtml file is the only one with lang attributes and they say "en" and not "en-GB" either. So something is strange. I will look into it. Thanks for your bug report! KevinH |
