Enhanced Typography not showing up in KP3 export to mobi

Hi,

I hope I'm posting this in the correct forum.

I've made an epub and loaded it into kindle previewer 3 for MacOS. It gives me the Enhanced Typography checkmark, and the kindle simulator shows hyphenation.

The exported mobi file by KP3, when sideloaded into a 5 year-old kindle voyager with the latest firmware, however, does not hyphenate, and has an oddly large line-height.

I haven't done much to the CSS to make things kindle-specific, in terms of media queries. Should I have?

Or does the kindle have a specific CSS term for hyphenation, like Apple does with its -webkit-hyphens?

I now have a collection of epub-hyphens, adobe-hyphenate, hyphens, CSS commands, all set to auto, so I could add one more...

Thanks for your input!

Mobi doesn't do hyphenation and the extra largr line-height could be due to your settings in the Aa menu. TO me, even the lowest line-hight is too large.

The best looking eBook settings are to use a L/R margin of -45px in html in the CSS, use the Hyphenate This! plugin to add hyphens, install ChareInk font for a smaller line-height. and finally use KF8 (AZW3) as your eBook format and forget KFX. That will (IMHO) give you a better reading experience on your Kindle the KFX.

You will get a smaller line-height, smaller L/R margins, hyphens, and a nice font to read with.

If this is a book that you plan to publish on Amazon you can just upload your source format to them (EPUB or DOCX) and they will convert to all of the different formats used by Kindle devices as appropriate. A book that supports Enhanced Typesetting (ET) will be delivered to newer apps and devices in KFX format instead of MOBI or KF8. KFX format enables hyphenation, page flip, and the other ET features.

If this is something you are doing just for yourself you can manually convert to KFX using a calibre plugin or for just hyphenation you can add soft hyphens to an AZW3 file within calibre. Neither of those are suitable for publishing however.

This is the first of a series of Buddhist Canon books, that use a special font for the diacritical Pali marks. It's strange to read that mobi does not do hyphenation, as I do recall seeing Kindle books that hyphenate. The Kindle Voyager device does not sideload KFX files for some reason, although I am able to export them from the KP3 program. Perhaps it's too old?

Adding hyphens through a plugin. That's a novel idea. I was under the impression that most ereaders harbored dictionaries which allowed them to intelligently hyphenate, if the option was set in the CSS. Apple Books further allows the reader to manually toggle the hyphenation, whereas the Adobe desktop software hardly ever shows any hyphens. Using the calibre plugin to Hyphenate This! (HT) does not change either program's behavior. Of course, here I'm talking about ePub, whereas I am asking specifically about the Kindle, which is somewhat of a new phenomenon in my country.

Is the HT plugin meant specifically for the Kindle?

Do I understand correctly, that although the KP3 exported mobi does not hyphenate, the eventual Amazon offering based upon the epub still might?

I don't know about the KP3 exported mobi but for the latter, yes; it's as jhowell said, if you follow his advice the user will get the best format for their device.

@Ryn given that you are selling your eBook, don't add hyphens to it. If Kindle Previewer shows that it will convert to KFX, then Kindles that can handle KFX will download KFX if synced and they will get hyphens. Readers/programs that allow hyphens for ePub will also show hyphens.

Those books are delivered to the device by Amazon in KFX format.

If you download a book from Amazon's website for USB sideloading you will never get KFX format, even if the device is capable of handling that format when delivered directly to the device.

Yes, that is correct. MOBI format does not do hyphenation on Kindle devices.

@Ryn Mobi also does not do embedded fonts. So your special font won't work. You will need to do media queries in CCS for Kindles and use graphics to show your special characters. This is going to make making this eBook more difficult. You can make ePub without the media queries as the ePub won't need them. Then you can copy the ePub and add in the graphics and media queries it will work as Mobi. KF8 will work and KFX should work.

Well, okay, so the idea is to offer the book through amazon, which in the netherlands goes through a distributor who only accepts epub. So far so good.

It's just that the foundation who wants these books made insists on viewing the proofs on a kindle device, which makes this a difficult proposition. They are quite design-minded, and don't like the fact that the screens look unequal due to the lack of hyphenation, the difficulty with keeping the custom font on screen, and the line-height, which personally I don't mind as I like whitespace.

I guess I'll tell them to get a kobo instead, or use desktop simulation software like the rest of us.
