problems converting a kindle book I've just bought
I have the 1.17 version of Kindle, and up to now no problem converting to epubs, but I've tried twice to convert this book and I have this error message:
Spoiler:
FYI I have in fact a modified version of Calibre portable to turn it into a 64b version, since the 32b didn't work for converting some of my heavier books (size and number of pages and files) - see
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...51&postcount=9.Can someone explain what is wrong and what I can do? If not I'll return it and buy from another seller |

Open a bug report and attach the file.

I realized I had tried to convert azw to kepub, so I tried azw to epub and the conversion worked. When I tried to edit the resulting epub, the editor told me the epub had unrecognized fonts and the "clé de reconnaissance" (something like recognizing key in English?) was missing from the OPF, and I should convert epub to epub before editing. It worked.
Then I went to Sigil, which said "Sigil has created a template NCX to support epub2 backwards compatibility." The resulting clean epub3 converted to kepub without apparent difficulty. But when I tried opening the resulting kepub from Calibre, I had the following error message Spoiler:
This is a plain epub, which I can read as an epub, so I don't plan to report the bug, unless the epub isn't readable on my Kobos: it seems to be just a very badly made azw - but I can hardly complain to Amazon that I can't convert their book... |

Did you install the KEPUB input PI. KEPUB is not a stock Calibre format

There's a better way to convert this eBook that will work. You will have to edit it after the conversion. Use KindleUnpack to shift the Kindle eBook to ePub. Then load the ePub in the editor and use the editor's error checker and epubcheck (editor plugin) to check for errors and fix them. In most cases, it's very easy to fix the errors.
What's happening with this conversion is that the eBook has embedded fonts and the fonts are obfuscated and Calibre is failing on the fonts. |

But, if the kepub has problems on the Kobo device, I suggest converting the AZW to epub and fixing that using the editor. Then convert that to kepub and sending it to the device. Or use the KoboTouchExtended driver. |

I restarted from the azw to epub conversion, as I wrote, and had some work to do with it. I then sent the the epub with KoboTouchExtended and could read it fine in the bus this morning. |

The correct way to use KindleUnpack to convert to ePub is... KindleUnpack > AZW3 > KF8 to ePub... That will format shift to ePub and put the ePub in Calibre. |
