Why some both Mobi filetypes will be converted to azw by the Amazon server

When I use calibre to convert some epub files into both Mobi filetypes and send it to kindle via email, I receive azw instead of azw3 on the device. When the same file is converted to mobi file using kindlegen, I receive azw3 correctly.
This problem only occurs in a small part of epub files, and there is no warning message when using kindlegen to generate mobi files.
Why does this happen?

When sending files to Amazon via email, Amazon chooses how to process the file when sending it to specific devices.

'azw' is a file name extension, it doesn't tell you what the internal file format is.

But quibbles aside, the most likely explanation is that calibre produces a 'both' file that contains both the MOBI and KF8 versions fo the book. Kindlegen produces a file that contains MOBI and KF8 AND the source ePub.

If you wan tthe same thing in calibre set the mobi filetype in the mobi output section of the conversion dialog to both. But note that metadata update does not work for such files.
