Calibre Versions (AKA Why Should I Upgrade?)

Elsewhere I mentioned that I'm using Calibre v.4.6. For a long time I was a faithful weekly updater, and then life got in the way... and now I just update the occasional plug-in. This brought a couple of replies

I generally update when there are major new features, a minor feature I'm interested in or when I get a new ereader that's not supported by old versions.

Currently I'm still on 4.23 (waiting for the deDRM plugin to be compatible with 5.x versions).

2 reasons to update:
1) A feature you want has been added
1b)support for your new device)

2)Your OS (or hardware) was updated and the version you have no longer works.

IMHO the rest is just to keep current for currents sake.
OTOH asking for help on 2.x or 3.x can limit your respondents ability to try your issue out.

Or features / bugs in plugins that you care about have been updated...

A lot of plugins now ported to python3 will not be tested in calibre 4.

Me too.

I never update / upgrade anything automatically and only when it's needed due to a real security issue or something is broken.

In my downloads folder I always keep the last two versions of an installer available. Has helped in more than a few cases where the latest version of a software has unwanted features/nasty bugs and the developer only has the newest version available on their site.

And there's a few pieces of niche software that I'm using an old free version because the developer turned it payware and I couldn't justify the price.

I keep lots of installers in my Dropbox. Some of them probably have newer versions, but I haven't bothered to hunt those down. A couple were bought years ago and I've no idea whether they even exist anymore. That said, I don't hang onto installers of every program I use. For example, Firefox, Chrome, LibreOffice and a couple of others I install fresh from the oven every time I get a new laptop or tablet. And as the Calibre website has all old versions available, there's no need for me to save old Calibre installers.

I tend to delete quicker if the older versions are easily accessible. Unless the installers are particularly large (e.g. LibreOffice is ~300 MB), because of course my internet will start acting up the moment I need to re-download it.

I updated to the newest version and now I can't download books to my reading app. I get unknown title and download incomplete. Restored my computer to the date of the last book I was able to download and open. Did not fix anything. I still can't download and open a book on my Android devices.
