Should I wait on getting an iRex DR?

After watching the market for the past couple of years and being unsatisfied with most of what was out there, I think I've finally decided to purchase an iRex Digital Reader 1000S.

The primary point I was waiting for was a large screen device that could handle larger pdf's with magazine style layouts, which is what a good amount of my ebook collection consists of (a lot of gaming, graphic novel, magazines).

The iRex caught my eye just by its simple design. I like that its pretty much just a screen with a few buttons on each side. The Sony is ok as well, but never did a good job with the pdf's I wanted to view due to its smaller size. The iliad would probably work, but again size was a problem. The Kindle was just too ugly, and had waaaay too many buttons for my taste. I wanted a reader, not a typewriter.

Now the only thing that would pause me purchasing the iRex is if there is going to be a similar product in COLOR coming out in less than a year. I've seen lots of rumors and stories, but no solid product announcements. And existing products like the sony, even if they did come out in color, still wouldn't be of the size I prefered (want that larger screen.)

So final call. Anyone know of any upcoming large format color products on the horizon, capable of viewing larger pdfs? Or will there be a new iRex under the Christmas Tree for me this year?

I would be extremely surprised if colour e-ink came out next year. It's not impossible but I don't think we'll see it for 2 or 3 years. Go for the iRex.

I also think the same, there has only been 2 color eink screens that i have sceen so far. one said 5 years development left, the other said, aval now for the low low price of $15,999.99... oh yeah and the screen takes 20 seconds to update

There should be a number of devices with 9.7" screens coming out mid 2009. It's a lot of money to spend - if you can wait another 6 months it might be as well to wait and see what appears next summer.

I am a relatively happy iLiad Book Edition owner. To me, size does does matter, and I do find the 8" a perfect medium for book-reading (I am keeping a "cheap" Sony for travel.) To others, other sizes may be better suited.

But I have not seen any major screen advances coming soon, so.... Of course, the prices will inevitably come down, but then whatever you buy now, will probably look like a Stone Age tool in a couple of years, anyway:-)

I don't know if this helps, but it's Christmas time and presents are always a good thing, particularly to oneself....
