Library Restore From Cloud Is Bad

I use a cloud backup service to continuously save all of my data on multiple hard drives. As a test, I restored my Calibre library and switched to the new file. It is recognized as a library but the latest entry is over a year old and all metadata is gone. The individual sub-directories for all the missing books appear to be there as are all (new and old) of the .opf files. What could cause this, and how can I fix it?

What cloud backup service? What operating system? If not part of the cloud backup service, what program was used to create/restore the backup? Generally, the more information you give, the easier it is to give helpful answers.

One note is that you should never backup your calibre data while calibre is running. The results can be interesting.

Could storage of your Calibre library is never recommended.

Cloud backup vs. cloud storage. As long as syncing is paused while calibre is running, the backup to the cloud should not affect calibre. Unless we are talking about Google where their versioning can corrupt calibre's backlink to the database using the bracketed numbers in directory names.

But can the cloud syncing be one way instead of the usual two way?

Some sync programs can do a one-way 'mirror' rather than a true sync. Set the destination folder to one in the cloud drive and it'll replicate any changes over to it while keeping the source folder untouched.
