What just happened?!?

I signed out of my ereader, and when I tried to sign back in, it's instead reset my Forma. All my collections are screwed up, my read/unread settings are gone, and now it's re-downloading most of my purchased ebooks from the Kobo website.

Anybody else had this issue???

I have to ask what did you expect to happen when you signed out of your ereader because what you are seeing is exactly what I would have expected to happen.

Books purchased from Kobo would be removed—after all, the ereader is no longer connected to that account, collections would revert to whatever Kobo's servers had for your collections, the database was wiped so your read/unread settings, highlights, etc. were cleared.

The only consolation is that your sideloaded books would not be removed and would be re-imported though the dates would be set to the current date and all reading statuses would be set to unread.

OK. I guess I'm a dummy, or maybe I should just read the manual first next time. I thought if I signed out and back in that it would just refresh my account... Dummy me...

Thanks for the info - lesson learned.

You're not a dummy. That's also exactly what I expected when I signed out of my Kobo account for the first time. What happened was definitely not expected. And, honestly, I don't know of anywhere else where signing out of an account means "resetting" that account. In my opinion, Kobo should make the results clearer with a "Are you sure? This will delete all Kobo books from your device..." dialog. On the upside, it's hard to forget the next time you consider "signing out."

Maybe "Remove account" might be a better wording? Either in the button itself or in the button in the confirmation dialog?

I once did the same thing. I assumed signing out would mean I would temporarily lose access to my DRMd books until I signed back in. I didn't know I would have to reinstall all my books. They really should include a warning about what exactly happens when you sign out.

I agree there should be a warning, but yeah; if you had an issue with syncing, you probably should have read the manual or googled a solution before trying things randomly.

My condolences.

I suspect that what you were looking for was the Repair your Kobo account option under Settings/Device Information.

Signing out of a Nook device will certainly do the exact same thing as what it does on a Kobo, any purchased book is wiped from the device, any non previously synced data is gone, and side loaded content will at best need to be resorted into collections when you sign back in. This has been the case since the first Nook ereader, and is true for the iOS and Android apps as well.

I'm fairly sure that the same is true for Amazon, but I can't confirm with first hand experience. I'd also wager any ereader with an attached ebook store would function the same way, but again I don't have first person experience with this.

On the Kindle you "Deregister." And when you click "Deregister" you get a confirmation that reads... "Deregister Your Kindle .... Your Kindle will be deregistered from your Amazon account, some features will not work, and some settings may not be saved. After deregistering, you can register your Kindle to another Amazon account. ... Are you sure you want to deregister? ... CANCEL ... DEREGISTER"

On a Nook you don't "sign out, you "Erase & Deregister Device." I don't know if the Nook has a confirmation screen. I'm away from home and don't want to take the chance. But the language makes it pretty clear what will happen if you follow through.

Older model Kindles maintained their Amazon content if the device was deregistered. Newer models no longer do that. You could deregister from one account, keep those books, then register to another account, and download those books. When "Family Sharing" was added, the behavior on a deregister changed so that Amazon content was removed from the Kindle when it was deregistered.

Fire tablets have always lost all Amazon content when deregistered.

I googled the he** out of this issue beforehand, and unfortunately the only thing that kept popping up was "reset your ereader". You're right though, I should have read the manual.

On the bright side, it cured the sync issue that I posted about in a different thread...
