Calibre KoboShelves data not transferring to Kobo

I've just noticed that all the books I've sideloaded onto my Kobo over the last few weeks have come across without any collection settings attached to them. I always update the KoboShelves in Calibre before transferring, but none of these new books show as having any collections assigned to them once they land in Kobo. Calibre is 4.23, Kobo Aura H2O Edition 2 has firmware 4.23.15548.

The only thing that stands out to me as unusual is that I replaced my laptop in mid-August so it is a new install of Calibre (would have been 4.22 initially but I updated to 4.23 within a day or two or that coming out) but using my pre-existing Calibre library that was copied to the new laptop. I definitely testing transferring books from 4.22 but can't be 100% sure that I checked whether the collection settings came across.

I've tried changing the Sending Books To Device metadata management from manual to automatic but this didn't make a difference. Is there something obvious I'm missing, or is it one of those weird things that might magically resolve when the next Kobo firmware or Calibre update comes out?

Did you back up your calibre library using the apps built in method or just copying the library folder over and setting it as your new library?

The former should have brought over settings etc if you told it to. The latter would just bring over books.

Regardless I suspect you’ll need to set up shelving again in Calibre.

I did the latter. I also have just realised that my Koboshelves was a custom column and therefore there was likely something else that I still had to do in setting Calibre up (which was telling the KoboTouch plugin to use that column for collections), and I’ve just tested it and everything is working fine now. But it sounds like all that could have been avoided if I’d just ported across settings too, so I’ll make a note for myself for next time. Thanks for your help.

@wychwoodnz: Have you configured the driver? This is separate from the library. Unless you (carefully) copied the calibre configuration from the other machine, it needs to be done on the new installation.

The other common reason for this to happen is changing between the built-in KoboTouch driver and the KoboTouchExtended driver. These are configured separately. Under the covers they share the same code and look the same, but, whichever is actually being used needs to be configured.

If the collections are still not being updated when all the configuration is in place, run calibre in debug mode and post the log. To do this, right click on the preferences button and select the option to restart in debug mode. Calibre will restart with a message about the debug log. Connect the device and when the connection jobs finish, close calibre. The debug log will be displayed. Post the full log, or PM it to me and I'll try and see what is wrong.

Do you still have access to the settings you used to use? If so, you can still copy them over.

For me, I'd be lost if I lost my settings as I have no idea how to recreate them all. That's why I have them backed up in multiple places including cloud storage.

No, I don't. I didn't think I'd tweaked Calibre away from its defaults very much but now I know better so will definitely back up the settings up going forward.
