Please help D:
Hi. I need help with installing Debian on my Kobo Mini. What I don't understand is how I'm supposed to write 3 images to an SD card. Also, apparently it has dual boot for linux and nickel. Wouldnt the image writing delete nickel? And will I lose my books/addons?

No, if you do it correctly it won't delete nickel. How this works is that you install two things onto different partitions (sections on the SD card). Then, you can use a boot manager (like KSM, or GRUB) to boot from one partition or another. You won't lose any books or addons provided you do it correctly.

Alternatively, it is possible to install an operating system such as linux or android onto a separate card and then boot off that card (I believe you trigger a manual reset reset while a bootable SD card is inserted in the external slot).

See the several guides on writing a firmware image to a uSD card in these forums. Gentle hint, open your Mini, extract the uSD card and place it in a safe spot. Purchase a replacement card, write the images to it and then install it in your Mini.

What three images? When I tried to find what you are talking about, I found five files. Three had file names that looked like "xxxxx.partnn.rar". Files named like that are almost definitely three parts of a single much larger file. They need to be reconnected when unpacking. The other two files were different compressions. So, I assume there was only one image available in three different formats.

But "three" might be because you have unpacked the image files to much and found the three partitions that are contained in the image. If you were talking about the images we have of the Kobo created cards, this is what I would think you have. But, I don't know how the Debian image is structured.

I highlighted "tried" above as you don't actually tell us what images you are using. I assume it is related to the one you posted in recently. That seems to have instructions, but, you probably need to do it from a Linux machine. And the lack of recent discussion in a thread like this, usually indicates that it works perfectly as described (hence no need to discuss) or doesn't work well enough to be interesting (hence no one bothering to discuss it). My bet is on the latter.

And honestly, the place you were asking is the correct place. This thread should be merged with that one.

@davidfor I was looking at MarekGibek's Dropbox for Kobo. There were 3 .rar files for Debian. Each had an img file. (part1, part2, part 3) Wondering why there are 3 rars instead of 1.

If the multipart .RAR files are properly configured, you should be able to unpack the first one and the remaining ones will automagically be unpacked. This should recreate the image file to write to a uSD card.

What did you use to extract the files? I went back a few years and located a set of 3 files called 2013-08-17_kobo_debian.part01.rar, 2013-08-17_kobo_debian.part02.rar, 2013-08-17_kobo_debian.part03.rar. I used 7Zip to open the first file and it showed a 7.8GB 2013-08-17_kobo_debian.img file. I dragged that file to my desktop and 7ZIP progressed through all 3 .rar files to generate the single .img file. If you try dragging and dropping from either the part02 or part03 file, it should generate an error. Please note that the 3 .rar files total about 640MB so the compression ratio is quite high.

Edit: attached a image showing all three files open in 7Zip with the multiarchive volume index visible.

Interesting. I just tried UltraZip from UltraZip.com and it extracted the multiparts into a single file.
