New Library from Kindle - No Titles ?

I just bought a Kindle book.

then I opened calibre and it wanted updating so I did that - to 4.23

then I tried to import my Kindle books to calibre.

found a 'my kindle' dir and asked Calibre to import from there and judging by the number of books it imported it was doing fine.

But now i find there's no titles in any of the books.

What can i do about that?

I had a system crash. this is a new win10 install. a new calibre folder.

There's various other calibre folders on other disks on this computer. All with various parts of my total library. None of them complete. I'm disorganised. Point is I don't know which library is the one that calibre has just made with all these cryptic titles.

If I can find it I'll delete it and start again. How do I find it?

Big main thing in a hurry: get today's Kindle book. I need to print out some of it.

Any help?

edit: since posting I've been googling around and I found the digital rights plugin thing and i did that. It is installed. And I deleted every book in the library and asked it again to reinstall the kindle directory.

got the same thing. long list of books with cryptic names that won't open.

Your problem is most likely that what you are trying to import into Calibre are KFX eBooks.

If you have a Kindle, you need to configure the DeDRM plugin correctly and download all of your Kindle eBook using "Download & Transfer via USB" from "Manage Your Content and Devices" Once you have the DeDRMplugin configured correctly for your Ki dle (if you have one), the downloads will be able to have the DRM removed.

Now if you don't have a Kindle, you'll need to read the thread all about KindleForPC/MAC. I know it's a long thread, but read enough to be able to sort yourself out. You will need to delete all the eBooks you've downloaded and download them all again.

Thanks for that.

I'm hoping it will be somewhat easier.

In the past I've done it many times. I don't have a Kindle - I have Kindle for the PC or whatever they call it.

I've been using Calibre and Kindle for years. My use is small scale, desultory. Sometimes nothing for six months.

I think I remember the 'new' Kindle thing - that'd be the KFX you mention perhaps?

I had to get a special old version of Kindle to download and I had to get the Calibre plugin.

I did both and all went well.

But then I thought there was an update to Calibre that made it not necessary to do all that?

I've now got the latest Calibre, as of this morning, and probably the latest Kindle, also as of this morning when I bought that book.

Do you have any more clues for me or I've got to read that thread? What about what I said, is it back to that old procedure again?

Or is it all something new?

edit: well I put up an old version of kindle and got that book this time as an azw or something and i could read the title (in kindle). so I asked Calibre to get it and first up it said it was already there ( I failed to empty the direcctory of all those books with the cryptic titles) and then it aborted saying that it was an 'amazon topaz' book and couldn't be processed.

this is not looking good.

Topaz is an old format that's really annoying to deal with. You are best to return it to Amazon for your money back. Most Topaz I've seen look like a bad photocopy. It's a scan with underlying text for searching. It's mazon't version of PDF but worse.

The latest KindleForPC is out and you are best to stick witht he 1.17 version if you can. Just remember to set the option to not download updates. It may ask you about downloading an update but select to not do it.

When you are setup with the DeDRM plugin, you'll be able to remove the DRM from your Kindle eBooks and you'll end up with mostly KF8 (AW3) eBooks and if the eBook is old enough, Mobi. If you have Topaz, that you cannot return, ignore them.

Once you are properly setup, life with Amazon eBooks will be a lot easier.

Thanks for that. Life with amazon used to be good. And if this topaz thing isn't going to keep cropping up then I can believe we can carry on. You say it's an old format. So maybe I can forget about it and soldier on.

thanks for your encouragement.
