USB cable charging stalls at 90%
I have a Kobo Aura HD. It's using the latest firmware. I don't have any modifications to it.
When I plug it into the computer with the included USB cable (USB 3.0 port), it charges well up until it reaches 90%. Then the last 10% is either extremely slow or it stops charging entirely. When I plug the eReader into my cell phone charger it charges fine. When I plug my cell phone into the computer with the USB cable it charges fine (slowly though). But the eReader and the USB cable together stall. Is this normal? ![]() |

Did you try a different cable? I would guess the problem is outside of your Kobo - as the Kobo charges well with the charger.
It could be the cable or the USB port on your computer. Likely not the Kobo.. I have seen many weird USB ports - so I am not surprised. |

USB ports are power limited. While you had a USB3 port, it was running as a USB2 port and the manufacturer may have limited the power to 500mA (a standard port) because the device did not do the secret USB3 handshake.

I had something similar happen after updating my Kobo Glo to the latest firmware and charging it via my laptop's USB 3 port.
The Glo charged fine up to 90%, but then the battery indicator appeared to get stuck. I left it to charge for another half hour without the battery showing an update. Upon removing the cable the battery indicator jumped to 100%. |

Sadly I don't have another USB cable available to test with.

Out of curiosity, I plugged my Kobo into the back USB port. (I'm one of those weirdos who uses a desktop.) It charged up fine. And when I plugged my cell phone in it charged pretty quickly too.
So whatever the problem is is limited to my front USB panel. Guessing it's some sort of power limiting like ducks said. I'll poke around the device manager later. Since the back ports are kind of a pain to reach I'll just keep using my cell phone charger for the Kobo. Last edited by ownedbycats; 09-06-2020 at 07:32 PM. |

Why not leave the cable plugged in at the back?

Because the way my desk is arranged the cable wouldn't reach the main part of the desk, and I don't like putting things on top of my computer tower.

I'm the same, and I also don't like to keep things plugged into the front, looks messy to me and even more I dislike having to find and plug in a cable when needed. I bought some longer cables to reach from the back and have them neatly along the edge of my desk held in place with the round self-adhesive cable clips. So the cables are out of the way, but hanging along the side of the desk when I do need them.

FWIW, my setup over is at least *two* cables plugged into the back, and looped around/resting on top of the UPS next to to the case when unused.
(If it weren't for the UPS, they'd probably be looped around one of the desk's feet instead or something). Just have to grab 'em from under the desk as needed, something I can generally do blind by now ![]() |
