Suggestion in understanding the reader content

I am trying to understand what I have on my KA1, because it seems I have less than 1 Gb left. The device has 8 Gb.

I have some contrasting numbers:
Calibre tells me I have 1265 ebooks

If I do a search on the the reader I have
954 epub files and
517 kepub (in .kobo\kepub)

1471 total

If I ask the ereader (Manage Downloads) I have

507 Kobo books
955 downloaded books

1462 total

The ereader data although slightly contrasting are pretty similar (9 books), but there is a strong (apparently) discordance between Calibre and the ereader (about 200 books).

If I search for everything on the ereader I have 9196 files for 5,8 Gb.

I am missing 1 Gb, somewhere,
Is someone able to make head or tail of this ?

Thank already!
Bruno

Update: I had a very careful look, and I deleted about 20 comics, which took up almost 1 Gb. It is better, but the 1 Gb difference between what is still there, though.

Could it be that you have cases of the same book uploaded to the Aura as ePub and kepub? Calibre would count that as one book (I think?) and the Kobo would count it as two.

But in that case, shouldn't I see it in Calibre as 2 books ?
200 duplicates would be visible, at least in Calibre, and unfortunately I do not see them

Calibre will stack the formats for a book if it knows the files are for the same book just different formats. You’d see on one of the side panels the different formats available when you have a book selected. Typically this happens when you convert an ebook I think you can make it happen with ebooks you add in different formats

I did not explain myself well, apologies.
I meant that I should see in the title that there are duplicates. Something like this, in parentheses (2 books). I do not see that.

As far as I know you’d only see it in the side panel and it would only be by counting the formats.

For example

Book Name (whatever other tabs you have) | formats: epub kepub

The above isn’t perfect but it should give you an idea of what you’d see.

When I connect a device, Calibre will show 2 books if from the same entry as shown here in the screenshot.

But if you should have duplicate books within Calibre, where there's actually 2 entries in Calibre even though the title is the same, it won't show the "2 books" notation. But different software just might see those dupe entries differently to come up with different totals.

Purchasing a book more than once used to happen to me often, until I cleaned up Calibre and make it a point to always check before making a purchase.

Firstly, where are you looking at the space reported? If it is the Device information page, that doesn't take into account root partition used for the operating system and the recovery partition. That is over 500MiB. The "About" page shows how much storage is available. It is on the second page for my Aura ONE, might be elsewhere the different sized devices. My Aura ONE shows 6.73GB as available.

As well as that, there is the question of whether the sizes that Kobo shows are metric or binary based. My bet is that it is metric. Whereas the calculations you are doing will be binary based. Or I should say, the PC will show them using binary. That would mean the space available on my Aura ONE would be 6.27GiB.

For calibre, where are you doing your count? Are you doing that from the library list and looking at what has matched to books in the library. If you have books on the device that are not in the library, you won't see them. The device list should show all the books.

There are other places for differences that make it hard to match the space and books on the device:
  • .kobo/kepub includes any previews, but, they don't show in calibre unless you changed some driver options.
  • The .kobo-images directory takes a lot of space for the covers. As well as your books, there will be cover images for any recommendations. These should only have the smaller sizes, but they do take space.
  • There are other files involved. The database for that number of books will be well over 100MiB in size. You can use a tool such as WinDirStat on Windows to get a very good display of where the space has gone.
  • You might have a few books that aren't in the database. That could be kepubs from Kobo that weren't cleaned up properly, or sideloaded books that weren't imported for some reason. Hopefully the account repair fixes the first. The latter will probably mean that you will see the importing screen when you disconnect the device from a PC even when you haven't added new books.
  • Directories can be excluded by the device for searching for books. If you have somehow put an epub in the kepub directory, it won't be imported.

There was another fairly recent thread asking the same basic question. That had some other ideas for checking the space. It is probably worth looking at.

A lot of good suggestions, thanks a lot, I’ll have a look in the directions you pointing at.
I looked at the images folders, they take up .5 Gb, that‘s accounted for.
I had not thought of looking in Calibre at the device, thanks for the suggestion.
I’ll try to find the thread you mention, maybe there are other suggestions there

Right now I do not have the situation you show, but I will try to look at the device side from Calibre, (suggested from Davidfour) and see what it tells me

Looked at Calibre, device side, and it show 1441 books, instead of 1265 which is very close to the number which is the sum of epubs and kepubs. Still about 30 books unaccounted for, I will need to investigate better, but we are close. About 10 are the Comics I do not store in Calibre, which reduces the number a bit.

The 1 Gb lost is still a mistery, I would hate it to be wasted space because of issues of cluster size as with the Hard Disk.

Thanks for the suggestions.

As the partition is just storage formatted as FAT32, it is going to have exactly the same issues as any other FAT32 partitions.
