Device: Kobo Aura H2O
Error communicating with device: "CorruptError: database disk image is malformed"

Hi folks!

I cleaned out my old ebooks from my Kobo aura H2O, and now i get the error from the title. The detailed log is:

calibre, version 3.22.1
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

CorruptError: database disk image is malformed

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 87, in run
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 510, in _books
File "site-packages\calibre\devices\kobo\driver.py", line 1877, in books
File "site-packages\calibre\devices\kobo\driver.py", line 1751, in get_bookshelvesforbook
File "c:\t\t\apsw-j6gj96\apsw-3.13.0-r1\src\cursor.c", line 236, in resetcursor
CorruptError: CorruptError: database disk image is malformed

I can still send books to my device, but I can't see what is on there and what not (in Calibre). Anyone know what to do?

On the device, a lot of empty collections (empty as in no actual books present, only white squares with "unknown author" and no title.

Calibre asks your devices Database for What it has.
Your devices database is corrupt, so Calibre choked and thus the error message
Code:
CorruptError: CorruptError: database disk image is malformed
You need to do what it takes to get your device (model) to rebuild its database.

Some, you have to do a full reset (wipes out everything on it). If it was synced to 'the cloud', it may re download once you sighn it back to your account. I believe a Kobo does this (I keep mine off-line, so mine would be a NO-GO at the restore part. but the DB would be corrected, but empty)

@maxxal22: What @theducks said is right. Something has caused the database on the device to become corrupt. Until that is fixed, calibre cannot communicate properly with the device, and you will get problems on the device like you are seeing.

Unless you have a recent backup the database, the solution is to sign out Kobo account and then back in. This will create a new database, download the details for any purchased books from Kobo and import the sideloaded books that are on the device. Unfortunately, you will lose the reading status and any annotations for the sideloaded books.

Sometimes the above is not enough and you will need to do a factory reset to get things working again. And sometimes, restarting the device will allow it to fix the database. But, the error you are seeing usually happens when the database is beyond fixing.

Thanks folks! I factory reset, and now everything is nice and dandy. Saves me from buying a new reader, though my Aura H2O is starting to show its age already and I feel myself tempted anyhow
