Sidebar and Dropcaps in PDF
Hello Guys,

My first post in forum to get help in conversion.

I'm trying to convert a pdf book to EPUB format for mobile friendly reading. The PDF has sidebars and dropcaps. Now these two things spoils the format of my EPUB.

Can you please help me with it?

PDF afaik has practically zero semantics and relies instead on arbitrary layout, or at the very least most don’t use any sort of semantics. EPUB on the other hand relies heavily on semantics and organization. You will be very well served to roll back to whatever made the PDF rather than the PDF, and if that’s not available probably knuckling down and just reading the PDF instead of trying to convert it. Thinking of sidebars in particular is giving me a deep malaise.

You're almost doomed. You need the source used to convert the PDF. About all you can do with a PDF, if you are lucky, is copy & paste the text and reformat. If unlucky you need OCR.

PDF is an end use delivery format to proof or generate paper. It's deliberately designed that you need the source to change it!

Give up the idea of converting PDF to ePub. Unless you are getting paid to do this, it's not worth it all all.

I've converted PDF to ePub and it wasn't worth doing so. Add in a sidebar and it's even less worth converting.
