Ok, I'm aware this will likely require telnet, I'm aware that can be enabled on all Kobos with wifi (or at least any of the ones released in say the last 5 years, but let me get back on to the topic. I'm potentially not going to be able to plug my Kobo in to my Mac (just because I'm out of USB ports, and don't really wanna shell out for a USB hub just for the sake of connecting my Kobo).
I'm tech savy, not an idiot, but I know what I do not know and that folks here do know (or at least probably mostly know I dunno how many of the tinkering folks use a Mac). So here's what I want to be able to do 1) send firmware updates and patches to the appropriate folder 2) send images to the screensaver folder I'm aware I can use OS X's Terminal to do this with telnet (once its enabled) but would prefer a GUI client, recommendations are of course welcome but I understand if none of you know of one for Mac, i can probably find one on my own). What I need to know: How do I enable telnet (preferably with an on/off option I can disable/enable as I wish just so the device is secure), and how do I then connect to my Kobo from my Mac. Bonus points if I can do this with NickleMenu, extra bonus points for walking me through what the config I'd need to make would look like. I am at least capable of making those ![]() I know there are threads with various telnet etc. tools, but I didn't want to derail those with this question, especially as the one that's most active seems to include quite a bit more than I need. Thanks in advance |

While I'd personally go with SSH for sftp/scp, a bare-bones, mostly stock solution would be FTP.
The toggle chain is part of NickelMenu's examples, and it doesn't require anything extra (except FW >= 4.22 to avoid old busybox issues w/ ftp). As for a macOS client, I recall using something with a duck in the name or icon at some point, but damned if I can remember the full name ;D. EDIT: Yay, Google brain: it's called Cyberduck. I have no idea what actual macOS users usually prefer, though ![]() |

Do you use KOReader? You can start a SSH server from there and SFTP into it on your Mac with any client of your choosing. I use ForkLift, just because I have it. But there are plenty of them for OS X, as you probably know. This is very easy to do. It's all available in the Network section of the KOReader menus. |

Ah success. Took a little tinkering and still seems a little hinky (could just have been FileZilla which I tried along with cyber duck)
At first I wasn’t able to connect because it wasn’t seeing the kobo at all, then it was a login error (btw login/pass is apparently just root/“blank” as in actually nothing), then it was timing out. But eventually through something I did it connected. CyberDuck doesn’t seem to have any issues maintaining a connection that I saw, I’ll test again tomorrow barring other feedback here) FileZilla disconnected and had issues reconnecting. It didn’t tell me why just that it couldn’t connect and then started to retry. Honestly either client works for me so I’m semi curious as to what might have caused the connection issues. I did get a kick out of both clients being very concerned about the l/p being sent in plaintext only because it’s connecting to a IP/Device that anyone not on my WAN/LAN can’t access. |
