Kindle books on Kobo device

I have a number of books purchased from Amazon, but never get around to reading them because I have hundreds of epub books on my Kobo device. I thought that it may be possible to convert a downloaded book from Amazon, then sideload it into the Kobo, so I downloaded a few to try out. Unfortunately, downloading a book provides an .azw file, and neither Calibre nor other converters that I have found can handle that.

Am I doing something wrong? Is it possible? And if so, how can I go about it?

While you will have to remove any DRM for calibre to read them, calibre is very capable of reading azw files and converting them to epub.

If the Kobo browser is good enough, you can aim it at the Kindle Cloud Reader

http://read.amazon.com

If you haven't used the browser before, it will require a trip through the settings:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUBJYdl_mMk

Your milleage will vary but I did it on my XBOX and it worked fine.

It should be somewhat simpler than installing Calibre, tracking down the deDRM tools, installing those and processing the books.
Good luck.

I'd seriously advise not reading in a browser on the Kobo. bite the bullet, use calibre and the Apprentice Alf tools. See a lot of discussion on the Kindle PC software in one of the stickied threads in the calibre forum, and just google for apprentice Alf to find the tools.

It's not that Calibre can't handle the .azw file. I do the same as you, move those .azw's to Calibre and convert them for my Kobo.

The problem you are facing is DRM. You need to install the deDRM tools. Once you do that, every time you move an .azw into Calibre, the DRM will be removed and you can easily send them to your Kobo.

Before you install the drDRM, go ahead and delete any .azw's you've already added to Calibre. It removed the DRM at time of import.

Google Apprentice Alf's blog. We're limited in the amount of info we can provide here.

Moved to the Kindle forum (from News!) because this is about the files and not the device.

Thanks everyone. That's very helpful. One last question - where is the best place to put the uzipped tools?

I believe you need to own a physical Kindle, for the Apprentice Alf tools to work. You download the book from Amazon, but you have to tell it which of your kindles you will be sideloading it onto. Then they create DRM keyed to THAT kindle.

With no physical kindle, I think it is not do-able. Someone will shortly correct me, if I'm wrong!

If I'm right, then the above suggestion to read via a browser might be the best option.

Yes, you are wrong. You can use KindleForPC or KindleForMAC to download and as long as it's one of the versions that allows you to stop KFX, you'll be all set. I'm was using the 1.17 version and it still works. But I have a Kindle so I can direct download.

It doesn't need to be a version that avoids KFX, just more recent DRM.
I use 1.24 and all my books are downloaded as KFX and import into Calibre fine.
