They can however also be used with languages based on the latin alphabet. So they are not totally useless and there is not really any more reason to shun them than to shun other fonts you happen to dislike from an aesthetic perspective. |

I believe there’s a patch to hide all the built in fonts. Obviously that’s not going to help if you like switching between the other built in fonts but if you load your own font on it’d do what you want

Thanks, but like you said, I like to use the usual Kobo fonts.

It comes down to one thing. In order to officially support a language, they have to include a font that will display that language! It really is that simple! Fonts that are CAPABLE of displaying Japanese or Chinese are purpose-built, because both are languages with incredibly complex writing systems. Not 26-40 letters and that's it. I guess Japanese and Chinese don’t need the advanced settings to tweak their fonts like everyone else... Sorry, you don’t get it. |

Anyway, the lack of advanced settings still does not eliminate the need for those fonts! This statement "They could be of use if they could use the advanced settings, but they are not. So that’s why I don’t understand why they are in the list. " was what I was responding to. And my point stands. They have a use, just not for you! |

From memory, the two Japanese fonts are used by the kepub renderer as the fallback font when characters are missing from the selected font. They are more complete than the other supplied fonts.

Edit: if you had said the following, I wouldn't have replied at all (and simply thought to myself, fair enough) "oh, ok, I get it. that is useful for other people. I still wish for my own purposes that we had the option to get rid of built-in fonts (or hide fonts) that we don't have a use for." And for the record. If there was a font that was only used for PDF and didn't allow advanced settings, and once the purpose of it had been explained to you, you still reacted the same way and said "I don't read PDFs, it shouldn't be there, it would be useful if it allowed advanced settings, but it doesn't so I don't understand why its there", my bafflement at your reaction would be identical. You might still not want the font, that's fine, but the reason that Kobo provides it as a built-in font, should be blatantly clear! Last edited by Uschiekid; 06-10-2020 at 02:59 PM. |

Whenever I pick anything other than the Japanese fonts, it looks like Kobo UD Kakugo (though the spacing changes, the font doesn't), so I have the choice of that or Tsukushi Mincho for the in-built fonts. |

I could swear I saw an option in one of the patches that accomplish this with one caveat- it would also remove any custom fonts. Of course, now I cannot find it!
