How to get rid of weird kobo named fonts?

On my Kobo Libra, I have some weird font named like :

AR UDJingxihei

Kobo Tsukushi Mincho

Kobo UD Kakugo

Is there a way to get rid of those fonts in the list of fonts ?

Edit : Am I the only one with those fonts ?

I think those fonts are the ones they use for Kobo's menus. But I may be wrong about that.

I can't actually help you get rid of them, but I can tell you they aren't weirdly named fonts. They are fonts that allow multi-lingual support for your device. I understand you might not be interested in that, but these built-in fonts allow those who wish to read Japanese and Chinese. Jingxihei I assume is for Chinese (and relatively new). Tsukushi Mincho and Kakugo are for Japanese. Since Rakuten bought Kobo, they have been supporting Japanese language and more recently also supporting Chinese.

They can however also be used with languages based on the latin alphabet. So they are not totally useless and there is not really any more reason to shun them than to shun other fonts you happen to dislike from an aesthetic perspective.

I believe there’s a patch to hide all the built in fonts. Obviously that’s not going to help if you like switching between the other built in fonts but if you load your own font on it’d do what you want

They could be of use if they could use the advanced settings, but they are not. So that’s why I don’t understand why they are in the list.

Thanks, but like you said, I like to use the usual Kobo fonts.

Because, like I said, you can't read Japanese or Chinese without them....that's why they are in the list. Not every feature is for every person. I personally appreciate not having to add a font to read a book in Japanese, or look up a word in Japanese or, heck, change to UI to Japanese if I feel like it. And I'm not even Japanese. I can't read Chinese, but I get why it is in my font list and don't begrudge people who can read Chinese its presence there. Sorry, I just don't get your statement above. It's on the list, so people can read in those languages. They are officially supported languages and they *require* a speciality font. All the other fonts? Cannot be used for those languages. Since the majority of people using them are using them to read those languages, optimizing them for English and other latin based languages is not a priority. In general, those fonts use the latin based letters within the font to write English or other foreign languages in the middle of Japanese or Chinese text. ie: one word like a brand name, etc.

It comes down to one thing. In order to officially support a language, they have to include a font that will display that language! It really is that simple! Fonts that are CAPABLE of displaying Japanese or Chinese are purpose-built, because both are languages with incredibly complex writing systems. Not 26-40 letters and that's it.

I guess Japanese and Chinese don’t need the advanced settings to tweak their fonts like everyone else... Sorry, you don’t get it.

It's not that simple. It can't be done the same way as the latin alphabet. The complexity of the characters mean there is little room to adjust. They would very easily become illegible. Maybe less so for a native speaker, but there are so many more lines in some characters than a latin character. I can't say that it is necessary or unnecessary, but I can say it might not be possible or even useful, since the adjustment possible might be so minor that it wouldn't be really noticeable.

Anyway, the lack of advanced settings still does not eliminate the need for those fonts! This statement "They could be of use if they could use the advanced settings, but they are not. So that’s why I don’t understand why they are in the list. " was what I was responding to. And my point stands. They have a use, just not for you!

From memory, the two Japanese fonts are used by the kepub renderer as the fallback font when characters are missing from the selected font. They are more complete than the other supplied fonts.

So, if I had asked : How can I get rid of the Amasis font, I would have been politically correct? Is that what you are really trying to say here?

Nope. Just thought you're reaction was strange. You didn't understand why they were there, I explained why they were there (and said, yes, they may have no use *for you*, if you want rid of them, fine), but it seemed a strange reaction to then keep questioning their existence *at all* once their purpose had been explained.

Edit: if you had said the following, I wouldn't have replied at all (and simply thought to myself, fair enough)
"oh, ok, I get it. that is useful for other people. I still wish for my own purposes that we had the option to get rid of built-in fonts (or hide fonts) that we don't have a use for."

And for the record. If there was a font that was only used for PDF and didn't allow advanced settings, and once the purpose of it had been explained to you, you still reacted the same way and said "I don't read PDFs, it shouldn't be there, it would be useful if it allowed advanced settings, but it doesn't so I don't understand why its there", my bafflement at your reaction would be identical. You might still not want the font, that's fine, but the reason that Kobo provides it as a built-in font, should be blatantly clear!

That could well be the case. I only know them for the purpose of reading in Japanese.

Whenever I pick anything other than the Japanese fonts, it looks like Kobo UD Kakugo (though the spacing changes, the font doesn't), so I have the choice of that or Tsukushi Mincho for the in-built fonts.

I could swear I saw an option in one of the patches that accomplish this with one caveat- it would also remove any custom fonts. Of course, now I cannot find it!

Sorry, you put too much effort for a simple technical question. I don’t believe you. And frankly, I don’t care. I was just asking if I could remove those fonts. You seemed to take it so very much personal.
