How to code footnotes in epub to read on Paperwhite?

How do I code a footnote so that I can click on it, get the popup, close it or hit [Back], and be back where I was?

I edit the epub version and convert to KFX using the plugin before side loading to the Kindle

Right now it seems the only way I've found is to use a pair of <a> ... </a> pointing at each other which doesn't seem to make the popup. I haven't bothered to do tha for a long time since it takes a lot of effort to get the IDs and everything to work

The first method using epub:type = "noteref" generates Calibre editor errors

I had tried to use method 2 (bi-directional links) a long time ago, but I think that back then I was converting to AZW3 books, and didn't like the results.

I tried method 2 again since I'm now converting to KFX for my Paperwhite and it does generate a popup (yea!!)
