Book Browser Context Menu: Move
Hi all!
I'm new to Sigil and trying to learn it. I discovered the MOVE... context menu item in the book browser, but I can't seem to make it do anything. The UG is silent on this topic. Any help much appreciated. -- bob |

You highlight a file, invoke Move and it will allow you to select from a list of destination folders or a completely new destination.

You can create new folders by prepending to the filename:
Code:
mynewfolder/file.xhtml Note that creating new folders does not make them appear in the Book Browser. The displayed Book Browser folders are virtual-only. They merely group things by file-type. Some things to keep in mind are: 1) you cannot move files outside of their virtual Book Browser group. 2) you need to enable the "Book Browser shows full path" user preference to be able to "see" the physical folder structure of your epub. |

Thanks for the quick reply, KevinH.
I tried doing what you suggested before I posted, but after clicking OK, I didn't see any changes in my book's file structure. The file I tried to move is still sitting in it's original location (the Text folder), and new folder I tried to create is nowhere to be seen. I saved the book, closed and reopened Sigil, but that made no difference. After reopening Sigil, attempting to move the file a second time resulted in an error about creating duplicate file with the same name -- but the original file hadn't moved; it was still in its original location, and there was no new folder created. I had expected that moving the file to a new folder would result in the creation of a new folder, with the file placed inside it. When I tried to move the file again, I got an error message about creating a duplicate file. Very strange! Sigil 1.20.0 on Windows 10, BTW. * later * I see the problem now. Sigil DID move the file, and it DID create the folder, but it did NOT update the Book Browser display. When I tried to delete the file, I saw in the confirmation dialog that file IS in a different folder. The problem is, the new folder is not displayed in the book browser window. It would be helpful it if were. |

You are confusing Virtual Folders with real folders. Sigil now shows virtual folders by file type not actual folders (although they can be the same). Think of virtual folders as groups of files by type
So try your move again with a fresh copy. Before the move hover over the file in BookBrowser to see its book path. After the move is done, mouse over and hover the file in BookBrowser to see its new full book path and not just the name. If you want to see full book paths all of the time, enable them in Sigil Preferences. |

As I said: Book Browser is not a physical representation of the epub's structure. It is virtual file-type grouping only (unless you use the the restructure tool to force an epub's structure to match the virtual one). Whoops! Kevin beat me to the punch.
