Hello, First Time eReader User with Kobo Clara HD
Happy to find this forum

Had my Kobo Clara HD and Kobo cover nearly a month. Purchased from a shop in Taiwan. I’m from USA.

I’m trying to use without connecting to a computer (MacBook recently died and started using Kobo without computer). So far, so good, after a bit of research.
- Buying books from Kobo/Rakuten
- Side loading ebooks from phone via FTP or USB/USB-OTG cable
- Firmware updates ok without computer.

Currently
- Hope to find a method to transfer books purchased from other sites like Amazon, Google Play, etc. without connecting to a computer
- Hoping to add Chinese dictionary (bought in a Chinese speaking country, but no US-Chinese dictionary onboard)

Hello and welcome to MobileRead!

Unfortunately you cannot transfer books with DRM (copy protection) purchased from Amazon or Google Play to your Kobo without a computer. For Google Play epubs with DRM you'll need to install Adobe Digital Editions. For Amazon books you'll need to remove the DRM and convert them (google Apprentice Alf on how to do that). None of the above-mentioned procedures can be done on a phone.

If I remember correctly, a certain set of plugins were written in python, and are open source. I have a rather full-featured python distribution on my phone (Pythonista) -- it MIGHT be possible, if you're ambitious enough. :-)

That is kind of what I've researched and read so far and thanks for confirming.

Do they work with Kindle for Android/iOS? If the OP needs to install Kindle for PC/Mac, they can't do that without a computer.

You can download the files, though you need a target device, so I guess that would be the fatal flaw.
